The Role
Own process engineering for bio-methanol and RNG facilities across design, commissioning, startup, operations support, troubleshooting, optimization, and process safety. Develop process documentation and simulations, specify gas treatment and conversion equipment, lead root-cause analyses and improvement projects, manage process changes, support HAZOP and compliance activities, and collaborate with operators, vendors, EPC partners, controls, construction, and project management. The role requires field commissioning support and approximately 40% travel.

Role Overview
The Senior Process Engineer will own the process engineering scope for M2X’s bio-methanol and RNG facilities across the full asset life cycle — site and process design, commissioning and startup, day-to-day operations support, and ongoing performance improvement. This individual will be the technical authority on gas conditioning, separation, and conversion unit operations: developing and maintaining PFDs, P&IDs, and heat and material balances; running simulations to evaluate design and off-design cases; troubleshooting alongside operators in the field; and identifying and executing improvements in methane recovery, yield, uptime, and safety. The ideal candidate is a hands-on chemical engineer who is equally comfortable in a simulation file, a HAZOP session, and a control room at 2 a.m. during a startup.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operations Support & Troubleshooting

  • Serve as the process engineering point of contact for operating sites, supporting operators and technicians on day-to-day performance, upsets, and equipment issues.
  • Lead root-cause analysis on process deviations, off-spec product, and equipment underperformance; drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Monitor plant data and KPIs (methane recovery, product quality, energy intensity, availability) and translate trends into actionable engineering recommendations.

2. Process & Site Design

  • Develop and maintain PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, equipment datasheets, line lists, and BOMs for new sites and modifications.
  • Build and review process simulations (HYSYS, Aspen, or equivalent) to size equipment and evaluate design, turndown, and off-design operating cases.
  • Specify and evaluate gas conditioning, separation, and conversion equipment — including PSA, TSA, membrane, cryogenic, and absorption/stripping systems, plus compression, refrigeration, heat exchange, and phase separation.

3. Commissioning & Startup

  • Support pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup in the field, including system walkdowns, punch-list resolution, and operating procedure development.
  • Execute performance and acceptance testing with technology vendors; document results and close out guarantees.
  • Train operations personnel on process intent, normal operating windows, and abnormal-condition response.

4. Continuous Improvement & Optimization

  • Identify, justify, and execute debottlenecking and reliability projects that improve throughput, methane recovery, energy use, and operating cost.
  • Own management-of-change for process modifications, from concept and economic justification through field implementation and as-built documentation.
  • Capture lessons learned across sites and feed them back into standard designs and operating practices.

5. Process Safety & Compliance

  • Lead or actively participate in HAZOP/PHA, LOPA, and relief-system reviews; track and close resulting action items.
  • Ensure designs and modifications comply with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, NFPA) and site permit conditions.
  • Partner with HSE and regulatory teams on emissions, monitoring, and reporting requirements for renewable fuels assets.

6. Vendor & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with technology vendors, consulting engineers, and EPC partners on equipment selection, design reviews, and field support.
  • Coordinate closely with project management, construction, controls, and operations to keep design intent intact through execution.
  • Stay current on emerging bio-methanol, RNG, and gas-conversion technologies and bring relevant options to the team.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering (or closely related discipline) and 10+ years of process engineering experience in gas processing, chemicals, refining, or renewable fuels.
  • Hands-on design and operating experience with gas separation and treating unit operations — PSA, TSA, membrane, cryogenic, and/or chemical absorption and stripping — plus supporting equipment such as compression, refrigeration, heat exchange, and phase separation.
  • Demonstrated ownership of PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, and BOMs, and active participation in HAZOP or other process hazard analyses.
  • Proficiency with process simulation software (HYSYS, Aspen, Pro/II, or equivalent) applied to real design, performance, and troubleshooting problems.
  • Field-proven commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting experience, with the communication skills to work shoulder-to-shoulder with operators, contractors, and vendors, and willingness to travel to project and operating sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience with RNG, landfill gas, biogas upgrading, or methanol/bio-methanol production — highly desired, though not required.
  • Experience commissioning and starting up new facilities, including vendor-witnessed performance testing.
  • Familiarity with reciprocating engines and generator sets, reactors, thermal oxidizers or flares, and rotating equipment in remote or lightly attended service.
  • Experience in a start-up or small-team environment where engineers own problems end to end; EIT or PE licensure a plus.
