Pay Range
This is the base salary pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire. Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors. In addition, this position is eligible for an incentive bonus.
Johns Manville is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Sr. Glass Engineer in the Furnace Technology team as part of the Engineering & Process Research organization.
This position plays a key role in our support of furnace operations and glass production. Responsibilities include utilizing glass-making furnace experience to guide projects to cost effective, best practice, designs to ensure successful project with respect to quality, technology, cost, and schedule, employ working knowledge of refractory properties/applications to ensure optimal refractories are used in projects to meet life expectancy and financial goals, and apply working knowledge of glass-making operations to assist with ongoing furnace life expectancy issues and hot repair requirements.
Ideal candidates will have a working knowledge of furnace operations, capital project management, and glass fiber production processes, experience in design and engineering of glass operations, and willingness to work directly with JM production facilities and Engineering & Process Research groups. A key aspect of this role is to identify scope and justify potential new furnace technology opportunities and benefits. Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage budgets, schedules, scopes, deliverables, forecasts, cash flows, execution, and reporting to meet the project objectives and deliver the expected benefits to the organization, for multi-discipline industrial manufacturing capital projects worldwide.
- Develop, guide, review, and present project feasibility studies and business cases that accurately identify project benefits, risks, and returns.
- Utilize glass-making furnace experience to guide projects to cost effective, best practice, designs to ensure successful project with respect to quality, technology, cost, and schedule.
- Employ working knowledge of refractory properties/applications to ensure optimal refractories are used in projects to meet life expectancy and financial goals.
- Provide technical supervision to refractory related developments including identification, qualification and testing of new refractory vendors and materials.
- Apply working knowledge of glass-making operations to assist with ongoing furnace life expectancy issues and hot repair requirements.
- Develop technical specifications and contracts for materials, equipment, and services for all aspects of projects and ensure compliance.
- Coordinate, review, provide oversight and manage external engineering resources, consultants, and contractors as needed to meet project objectives.
- Design of environmentally compliant processes and specification of environmentally compliant equipment, ensures that all permit requirements are considered and addressed in the design, and that potential environmental issues are identified and addressed during project execution.
- Design of safe processes and specification of equipment, ensures that ergonomics is considered in all areas of design, and that potential safety and health hazards are identified and eliminated during project execution.
- Ensure that all safety policies and procedures are followed, driving a zero-incident project environment.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or science field. Requires a minimum of 5 years combined work experience with positions in Engineering, Process Research, and Operations.
- Demonstrated success managing capital projects, $5-$20M, and consistently delivers successful budgets with projects of medium/high complexity.
- Knowledgeable project management skills including the use of JM project management and procurement systems (InvEx Pro, SAP, Ariba, etc.)
- Leads a project team to achieve milestones and objectives by setting priorities and providing direction. May provide feedback for performance evaluations.
- Solid interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, problem solving skills, negotiating skills, and process troubleshooting skills
- Demonstrated high level of drive and initiative to complete assigned tasks and independently investigate & seek out improvement opportunities
- Demonstrated ability to provide complex, innovative, technical solutions to project, furnace, and process engineering problems
- Knowledgeable of the supply chain process, bidding, evaluating, contractor selection, and risk mitigation to JM through smart contracting
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and other related software applications/environments for communicating, analyzing, monitoring, costing, and reporting
- Must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously in different phases
- Must be able to identify good scope interfaces and be aware of risk management principles to mitigate risk to JM
- Heavy travel required (45-60 or more days per year)
- May be required to lift, carry, push, or pull up to and including 35 pounds.
- Work environment is typical of a manufacturing facility (may be exposed to environmental conditions of cold, heat, high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, heights, dust/mist/gas/fumes, extensive walking or climbing, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- PMP Certification
- Proficient in project scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6)
- Proficient in advanced engineering tools (e.g., AutoCAD)
- Experience with a continuous process discipline such as Six Sigma/ Lean/ TQM manufacturing environment
- Lean Six Sigma Black/Green Belt certification
- Demonstrated proficiency in writing, reviewing, and negotiating technical specifications and contracts
- Knowledge of raw materials and glass fiber forming processes
- Experience with air-gas combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, and electric fired glass furnace operations
