The Impact You Will Have
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is hiring a Senior Financial Underwriter Consultant in Eagan, MN. As a Senior Financial Underwriter Consultant, you will support large employer accounts, applying advanced underwriting expertise across predominantly self‑funded medical and pharmacy solutions, including complex Medical and Pharma RFPs. The position leads or contributes to enterprise‑wide initiatives and new product, system, and financial design, while performing sophisticated risk analysis, negotiation, and consultative problem‑solving. The Underwriter independently manages a large block of complex accounts, partners closely with sales, actuarial, legal, and account management teams, and translates technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders. Additionally, this role serves as a subject‑matter expert to the organization, mentoring junior staff and acting as a trusted cross‑functional advisor with a strong focus on accuracy, deadlines, and detail.
The ideal candidate is a proven healthcare underwriter with at least six years of experience in both self-insured and fully-insured environments. They bring expertise in pharmacy pricing, stop-loss strategies, and analyzing complex data to build competitive proposals. Comfortable with high-volume cases and carrier reports, they can quickly step in and contribute. Your Responsibilities
- Analyzes and evaluates existing and new business complex risk for all funding types.
- Completes financial analysis for settlements and agreements for self insured groups.
- Provides communication to internal and external customers expressing complex concepts in understandable terms.
- Coordinates with others on new product development to determine product structure and design, corporate financial impact, systems capabilities, underwriting rating policies, legal implications, and contract language.
- Keeps abreast of changes in state and federal healthcare legislation.
- Represents department or division in lieu of management.
- Plans, organizes and directs special underwriting projects that include underwriting methodology, data analysis, financial policies, rating systems and corporate health initiatives.
- Participates or leads the underwriting training programs, from needs assessment, material design, delivery/training and evaluation to ensure consistent application of underwriting policies and methodology.
- Provides consultation, technical guidance, documentation and training to other departments, underwriting management and staff, promoting education and transparency.
Required Skills and Experiences
- 6+ years of related (Healthcare Financial Underwriting) professional experience. All relevant experience including work, education, transferable skills, and military experience will be considered.
- Comprehensive knowledge of health insurance industry, competitive environment, underwriting guidelines, principles of risk selection, funding types and contractual agreements.
- Strong proficiency in Excel, Word, Adobe and Access.
- Advanced analytic and interpretive skills with well developed problem solving ability.
- Proven ability to work independently, as well as leading or participating in a team environment.
- Strong relationship building ability.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, with presentation experience.
- Proven success with negotiation and collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically.
- High school diploma (or equivalency) and legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Preferred Skills and Experiences
- Bachelor's degree
- Prior experience underwriting self-insured, large employer groups is strongly preferred
- Familiar with pharmaceutical guarantees and pricing
- Stop-loss experience
Role designation definition: Teleworking is working full time remote. Hybrid is a minimum of 2 days onsite. Onsite is full-time onsite.
Compensation and Benefits$90,800.00 - $120,300.00 - $149,800.00 AnnualPay is based on several factors which vary based on position, including skills, ability, and knowledge the selected individual is bringing to the specific job.
