Team Overview
The IT Ops DBA team provide Database Platform delivery and support for TU UK.As part of the DBA Team, you will play a critical role in ensuring that systems are tuned and built to scale with proper controls in place to ensure high availability.
Working alongside and collaborating with Product Delivery and support teams on a daily basis, you will be focused on helping to deliver new and key capabilities into the business.
Your role will entail building and maintaining optimised and highly available database platforms, automating all manual steps to ensure that deployments are repeatable, reliable and rapid. The role will not just see you provide this as an initial service, but you will then provide the means to which the development function can self serve to perform these installations via performant automated pipelines.
Along the way, you will be required to proactively lead or assist Product Delivery teams to troubleshoot issues within the database environments, provide consultancy in the area of Route to Live pipelines and their ongoing maintenance, plus ensuring that teams understand the critical importance of oversight in how data is managed and secured.
As solutions develop you will assist development teams ensure the operability of those solutions often providing a bridge between development and operational teams. This is a hybrid position and involves regular performance of job responsibilities virtually as well as in-person at an assigned TU office location for a minimum of two days a week.
Role Overview And Core Responsibilities
- Building and maintaining optimised and highly available database platforms.
- Building and continuously improving CI/CD Pipelines to ensure databases are deployed and configured using automation technologies.
- Establish consistent standards for providing highly available and fault tolerant systems.
- Identify and execute on opportunities to automate and streamline processes.
- Troubleshooting data issues, providing consultancy in the area of data growth and ongoing maintenance.
- Proof of Concept development to enhance and support the work of the UK IT Ops DBA team.
- Contribute to community best practices.
- Ensure that systems are secure and compliant (SOX, PCI etc.).
- Provide UK business hours support for TU UK database platforms.
- Provide out of hours support as requires, as part of the DBA on-call rota duties
Required Knowledge And Experiences
- At least five years experience working as a SQL Server DBA, with MS SQL Server (2014-current)
- Experience of supporting PostGreSQL in an enterprise environment
- Experience with database migrations and upgrades.
- Advanced use of T-SQL (stored procedures, SQL Agent Jobs, Deployment automation)
- Experience of High Availability / Disaster Recovery technologies (Mirroring, Always On Availability Groups)
- Experience of Replication (especially transactional with centralised distribution)
- Proven experience of working with sensitive data in a secure manner.
- Solid understanding of DevOps, Agile, Scrum, Kanban processes and methodologies
- Familiarity with use of source control, especially around database projects (including branching, workflow, peer reviews etc.)
- Good technical understanding of TFS/Azure DevOps Server and Octopus Deploy.
- Good level of PowerShell scripting and automation.
- Excellent troubleshooting/fault resolution skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and embrace industry developments and practices from both a Development and Operations background.
