The role / impact
As a Senior Network Engineer, you will design and maintain the critical cloud infrastructure patterns that enable Xero’s development teams to ship software securely and at scale. Your work focuses on architecting robust network solutions across AWS, and occasionally Azure or GCP, ensuring our connectivity is fast, reliable, and optimized for global performance.
By developing automated infrastructure-as-code and managing complex routing and DNS services, you directly reduce the cognitive load for our product teams. You will act as a technical mentor and a key interface with security teams, balancing high-speed delivery with the highest standards of safety.
The team / how they connect
You will join PaaS Networks, a cross-functional agile team of five dedicated to building platform products that empower our developers. The team is predominantly in Melbourne but you will collaborate with stakeholders globally to create seamless, self-service infrastructure.
The team is currently working on
Modernising our connectivity by transitioning from Transit Gateway to Cloud WAN to provide more transparent and faster routing.
Implementing a comprehensive log aggregation and observability toolset using New Relic and CloudWatch to drastically reduce incident response times.
Scaling our global DNS architecture and refining self-service capabilities to give developers more autonomy over their network requirements.
Automating our multi-cloud environment using Terraform, Python, and CI/CD pipelines to ensure consistent and repeatable deployments.
Where and how you can work
This role is based in Melbourne or Sydney, though the core team is located in Melbourne. Xero supports a hybrid working model, offering a blend of home-based focus and office-based collaboration, with modern ergonomic workstations and a culture that values flexibility.
Here are some of the things we are looking for
You bring deep technical proficiency in AWS networking, particularly with VPCs, Transit Gateways, and connectivity patterns.
A strong background in infrastructure-as-code is essential, as you will be crafting Terraform modules to automate complex environments.
Your toolkit includes scripting languages like Python or Shell to build tools that streamline network operations.
Experience with observability platforms such as New Relic or CloudWatch helps you diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks.
You possess a natural ability to translate legacy network setups into modern, high-speed cloud architectures.
Excellent communication skills allow you to keep diverse stakeholders informed while collaborating on secure system designs.
