Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer

Neupulse is at a turning point.
Our wearable neurostimulation device is launching
commercially.
At the heart of that device is firmware. We're looking for a
Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to own it.
The role
Today, our device development is largely handled by an
external partner. You'll be our internal technical authority for it — working
hand in hand with that partner to keep firmware reliable and compliant now,
while building the pathway to bring that capability in-house over time.
It's hands-on, safety-critical work on a device people wear
every day: C/C++ on STM32, FreeRTOS on ARM Cortex-M, low-power and
battery-operated, talking to iOS and Android over BLE.
You'll:
- Own
the firmware relationship with our external development partner —
direction, reviews, quality, and the verification and release evidence
that stands up to regulatory scrutiny
- Build
the pathway to bring firmware capability in-house — deciding what to
internalise and when, and growing the team to do it
- Stay
hands-on and set the standard: production-quality firmware, reusable
frameworks, coding practices and reviews across current and future
products
- Own
security — threat assessment, vulnerability management, and secure device
updates
- Work
shoulder to shoulder with hardware, software, quality and regulatory,
keeping everything traceable and compliant with ISO 13485 and IEC 62304
You'll likely bring
- 5+
years delivering embedded firmware through the full product lifecycle,
with a track record of robust releases and clean documentation
- Strong
experience with FreeRTOS on ARM Cortex-M in safety-critical settings
- Real
depth in low-power, battery-operated devices that communicate with mobile
over BLE
- 3+
years in a regulated industry — medical device and IEC 62304 ideally
- The
credibility to direct an external development partner today, and the
appetite to build and lead an in-house capability tomorrow
- Fluency
in C/C++, embedded architecture, modular design, and disciplined Git-based
workflows
- A
security mindset for embedded firmware (a genuine plus)

Skills Required
- 5+ years delivering embedded firmware through the full product lifecycle
- Track record of robust releases and clean documentation
- Strong experience with FreeRTOS on ARM Cortex-M in safety-critical settings
- Experience developing low-power, battery-operated devices communicating with mobile platforms over BLE
- 3+ years of experience in a regulated industry
- Experience with medical devices and IEC 62304
- Ability to direct an external development partner and build an in-house firmware capability
- Fluency in C/C++, embedded architecture, modular design, and Git-based workflows
- Experience or strong mindset in embedded firmware security
- Ability to work hybrid in Basingstoke with regular on-site collaboration
What We Do
Neupulse is a neurotechnology company founded as a University of Nottingham spin-out. It develops non-invasive, wearable neuromodulation technologies intended to improve quality of life for people with neurological and mental-health conditions, including Tourette Syndrome. Its drug-free products use gentle nerve stimulation, and the company is working toward regulatory approval and commercialization of medical and wellness devices while building the evidence base for clinicians and healthcare systems.
