Job Description
Senior Data Discovery and Enrichment Expert II
Do you enjoy being part of a global team that works with a diverse range of products and technology?
Do you enjoy mentoring other engineers, and helping them grow their careers?
About our Team:
Knowledge Innovation & Taxonomy Engineering (KITE) is the team within Elsevier Operations responsible for the taxonomies, vocabularies and knowledge graphs that sit beneath many of Elsevier’s products. In plain terms, a taxonomy is a structured, standardized, vocabulary of concepts, - such as diseases, drugs, materials or research topics — and the relationships between them. This shared structure is what lets our products tag content consistently, return relevant search results, connect related information, and feed reliable, well-grounded answers to AI features.
Main areas of work
• Taxonomy automation development — pipelines, scripts and tools that speed up taxonomy creation and editorial work.
• Platform development and support for CENtree, the shared taxonomy-management system used across all teams.
• Automated Curation and enrichment of taxonomies with semantic structure and relationships and their operationalization as reusable services.
About the Role:
We are looking for an individual to support our team in linking our existing taxonomies and ontologies in a meaningful way, applying linked data standards and best practices. The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills in semantic web technologies with a solid understanding of data modelling for knowledge organization systems.
Responsibilities:
· Design and implement methods for linking and aligning existing taxonomies and ontologies
· Model and maintain controlled vocabularies, taxonomies and ontologies using SKOS, SKOS-XL, and OWL
· Query and manipulate semantic data using SPARQL
· Integrate taxonomy/ontology data with other systems via REST APIs
· Write and maintain Python scripts/tools to support data modeling and integration workflows
· Collaborate with the team to understand data needs and translate them into semantic data models
Requirements:
· Extensive hands-on experience with SPARQL
· Advanced Python programming skills
· Experience working with REST APIs
· Good data modelling experience
· Experience with at least one taxonomy/ontology management tool (e.g., Centre, Synaptica, Top Braid, Protégé, or equivalent)
· Understanding of linked data standards and principles
· Familiarity with semantic web standards (RDF, RDFS, JSON-LD)
· Ability to understand and translate business/data needs into semantic modeling solutions
Nice to Have
· Prior experience linking or aligning multiple taxonomies/ontologies at scale
· Experience using Git/GitHub
· Understanding of AWS (specifically Batch, Lambda, Athena, S3, ECR, RDS, SNS/SQS)
· Hands-on knowledge of automation, CI/CD a plus
· Background in Life Sciences or similar
· Experience with SHACL
