Senior Content Consultant
Intro

We’re looking for an experienced content and communications specialist to join us on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract, based in Darlington with hybrid working. You’ll help shape how we support our members across a wide range of projects and ongoing improvements, creating clear, accessible and insight‑driven communications.

As a Senior Content Consultant, you’ll play a leading role in crafting meaningful, member‑first content that strengthens understanding and supports pension scheme members. If you’re motivated by purposeful work, thrive in complex environments, and want to make a real difference to how our members experience their pension, this is a fantastic opportunity to have impact from day one.

Who we are

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds.

Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. Railpen takes a holistic view, focusing on how we serve members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into.

The Role

In this role, you’ll provide strategic communications leadership across multiple projects and business‑wide change initiatives. You’ll shape clear, member‑first communications that build understanding, reduce effort, and support colleagues across the organisation to deliver change well.

You will:

  • Lead the design, planning and delivery of communication strategies across a range of projects and continuous‑improvement initiatives, offering clear advice on risks, issues and best practice.

  • Use insight, qualitative and quantitative to shape content, refine journeys and identify opportunities to reduce contact, failure demand and confusion.

  • Create and review high‑quality, accessible content across digital and print channels, ensuring clarity, accuracy and alignment with Railpen’s content standards, governance expectations and regulatory requirements.

  • Champion consistent, member‑focused content practices across teams, helping colleagues apply our standards confidently and consistently.

  • Collaborate with a broad set of stakeholders, including project managers, operational teams, digital colleagues, subject matter experts and senior leaders, ensuring communications land well with each audience group.

  • Lead or support member experience improvement initiatives from discovery through delivery, using data and feedback to measure effectiveness and iterate as needed.

Your work will help shape how members experience important changes, how confidently they engage with their pension, and how well teams across Railpen deliver clear, useful and timely communications.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.

The Person

You’ll be a strong fit for this role if you:

  • Bring experience working in a collaborative communications environment, ideally within complex, regulated or member‑focused organisations.

  • Can translate complexity into simple, human, accessible content across multiple channels.

  • Are confident advising and influencing senior stakeholders, building trusted relationships and constructively challenging to ensure the member perspective is always represented.

  • Can balance strategic thinking with hands‑on content delivery, moving comfortably between the two as project needs evolve.

  • Are organised, analytical and comfortable managing multiple priorities, deadlines and stakeholders.

  • Have a genuine commitment to high‑quality, inclusive, member‑first communication and a curiosity for insight, data and continuous improvement.

If you’re motivated by making a real difference to people’s understanding and experience of their pension, you’ll thrive here.

Our values of integrity, community and alignment are the guiding principles that influence our behaviour. They help us make decisions and shape our relationships with others. They’re what we stand for. You will actively demonstrate our values, helping to create a safe environment, to place the needs of the community above oneself and, through a culture of ‘fair challenge’, align to the best interests of our members.
