The Senior Cloud Engineer serves as a key technical role responsible for driving continuous improvement, operational excellence, and compliance across Marathon Petroleum's cloud and application hosting environments. This role partners closely with managed service providers, internal application owners, cybersecurity teams, and infrastructure stakeholders to ensure cloud services are delivered securely, efficiently, and in alignment with established standards and business objectives.
The position focuses on identifying opportunities to improve service delivery processes, automate operational activities, enhance platform reliability, and strengthen governance controls across the cloud ecosystem. The Senior Cloud Engineer works collaboratively with application managed service providers and internal business partners to optimize application performance, reduce operational risk, improve compliance outcomes, and accelerate the delivery of technology solutions that create measurable business value.
Through proactive engagement with service providers, operational teams, and application stakeholders, this role drives adoption of modern cloud practices, promotes standardization and automation, and ensures continuous advancement of cloud capabilities, monitoring, resiliency, and cost optimization efforts. The Senior Cloud Engineer acts as a trusted technical advisor, helping bridge the gap between business requirements, application support organizations, and cloud platform teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and compliant technology services that support Marathon Petroleum's strategic objectives.

- Develops and maintains a roadmap for continuous improvement, operational maturity, and service optimization across cloud platforms and managed application services based on business priorities and technology strategy.
- Facilitates performance optimization, service improvement initiatives, and infrastructure cost analysis to improve platform reliability, operational efficiency, and business value delivery.
- Recommends and implements solutions to address service health trends, operational challenges, and compliance gaps identified through monitoring, reporting, audits, and stakeholder feedback. Partners with infrastructure support, application managed service providers, and development teams to ensure continuous availability and operational continuity of critical business applications.
- Facilitates all aspects of the cloud solution lifecycle, including planning, requirements gathering, implementation, testing, quality assurance, operational readiness, and transition to support teams.
- Drives continuous service improvement by supporting root cause analysis for major incidents, identifying recurring operational issues, and partnering with engineering teams, managed service providers, and application stakeholders to implement remediation and preventive measures.
- Oversees incident management activities by monitoring troubleshooting efforts, ensuring timely issue resolution, documenting root causes and corrective actions, promoting knowledge sharing across support organizations, and maintaining operational documentation for cloud and application hosting solutions to support reliability and compliance.
- Utilizes configuration management, automation, and Infrastructure-as-Code solutions to improve deployment consistency, accelerate service delivery, and reduce manual operational effort.
- Maintains system configurations, governance baselines, and operational standards to support secure application development, regulatory compliance, risk management, and enterprise technology policies.
- Collaborates with application owners and managed service providers to establish standardized platform solutions, service delivery models, and technology patterns that support application reliability, scalability, compliance, and long-term sustainability.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, related field or equivalent experience.
- Five (5) or more years of relevant experience required.
- Preferred certifications include Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305), Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400), ITIL 4 Managing Professional, FinOps Certified Practitioner, Cybersecurity Architect (SC-100), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or other comparable cloud, security, and enterprise architecture credentials.

- Cloud Networking - Cloud networking refers to the practice of using cloud-based infrastructure and services to facilitate efficient communication, data transfer, and connectivity between devices, applications, and users over the internet. It involves leveraging cloud computing resources to optimize network performance, scalability, and accessibility, enabling organizations to securely access and manage their data and applications from anywhere.
- Cloud Storage - The ability to design, implement, manage and maintain cloud-based storage solutions leveraging cloud storage concepts and technologies with a working knowledge of cloud storage architecture and cloud storage security leveraging cloud-based storage tools and platforms.
- Containerization - Containerization is form of operating system virtualization, through which applications are run in isolated user spaces called containers, all using the same shared operating system (OS). Container orchestration automatically provisions, deploys, scales, and manages containerized applications without worrying about the underlying infrastructure.
- Database Management - Knowledge of governance frameworks for data analytics, including data usage policies, data access controls, and oversight of analytical processes.
- General Programming - Applies a computer language to communicate with computers using a set of instructions and to automate the execution of tasks.
- Operating System Fundamentals - System software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and provides common services for computer programs.
- Service Delivery Management - The manner in which an organization provides users access to IT services, which include applications, data storage and other business resources.
- Troubleshooting - The act or process of discovering and resolving problems, disputes, or mechanical issues through a systematic, usually iterative, approach.
- Virtualization - The ability to design, implement, and manage virtualized environments in a cloud environment as well as best practices for deploying, maintaining, managing, and optimizing virtual machines leveraging a working knowledge of virtualization concepts and technologies using cloud-based tools and platforms.
