Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the timely and accurate execution of general accounting, reconciliation, and reporting functions supporting Specialty Program Group's insurance operations. This role partners closely with the Director of Accounting and cross-functional teams (Underwriting, Collections, Accounting & Compliance Team) to ensure the integrity of financial data, drive process improvement, and support month-end and year-end close activities. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting skills with insurance industry knowledge and the judgment to independently resolve complex reconciling items.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations, including bank, premium trust, and intercompany accounts, resolving aged and complex reconciling items.
  • Perform month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, and account analysis in accordance with GAAP and statutory accounting requirements.
  • Monitor and manage unapplied cash (UC), unearned commission, and premium receivable/payable balances, coordinating with Underwriting and Collections to clear outstanding items timely.
  • Support Blackline (or equivalent) reconciliation processes, ensuring reconciliations are completed within established deadlines.
  • Assist with the review of financial statements and management reporting packages, including variance analysis versus budget and prior periods.
  • Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies raised by underwriters, agents, or program administrators, escalating complex issues to the Director of Accounting as needed.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls and documented procedures over accounting processes; support internal and external audit requests.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Staff Accountants, reviewing their work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce reconciling exceptions.
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Perform other accounting duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience; insurance, MGA/MGU, or program business experience strongly preferred.
  • CPA or active pursuit of CPA license a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP; familiarity with statutory accounting principles (SAP) a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required; experience with Oracle, Blackline, QuickBooks, or similar ERP/reconciliation platforms preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interacting with internal teams and external carrier/agent partners.
  • High degree of integrity and discretion in handling confidential financial information.
