Smith & Nephew (S+N) is a large multinational Medical Technology organization with an extensive Enterprise Applications ecosystem to run end-to-end business operations. ERPs form the core of this ecosystem and are tightly integrated with best-in-class systems such as Salesforce, Windchill, Movemedical, Maestro, Ariba, Workday and many more. At S+N, SAP serves as our primary and strategic ERP platform, running 80% of our operations and revenue.

We are seeking a Senior Manager - SAP Technology to design and deliver SAP technical solutions and customizations aligned with business requirements, while supporting our strategic transition to SAP S/4HANA. This pivotal role will play a key part in enabling Smith & Nephew's digital transformation and driving sustained business growth.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead SAP technical development across SAP ECC, S/4HANA, SAP BTP, SAP Fiori, SAP Integration Suite, and related technologies.
  • Review and provide high-level technical solution proposals for projects, enhancements, and strategic initiatives.
  • Review, approve, and govern ABAP and Middleware technical specifications. Establish and enforce technical standards, architecture principles, and governance across on-premises, SAP BTP Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and SAP HEC environments.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to SAP developers, architects, and support teams. Drive SAP technology roadmaps, modernization programs, and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Oversee ABAP enhancements, reports, interfaces, forms, workflows, APIs, and custom applications. Lead SAP Fiori/UI5 development and UX modernization.
  • Manage SAP and non-SAP integrations via SAP PI/PO, SAP Integration Suite (CPI), APIs, web services, and middleware platforms.
  • Oversee SAP technical operations, production support, and major incident resolution, including Level 3 support and escalation management for critical P1/P2 issues.
  • Lead SAP Basis teams to drive system performance optimization, monitoring, capacity planning, and technical stability. And co-ordinate system upgrades, migrations, patching, and release deployments.
  • Ensure compliance with IT governance, cybersecurity policies, audit requirements, and SAP licensing obligations; support internal, external, and vendor audits.
  • Collaborate closely with functional teams, business stakeholders, project managers, system integrators, and vendors to deliver business value.
  • Manage technical project delivery, including planning, budgeting, risk management, resource allocation, and execution. Ensure SAP initiatives are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with quality and operational standards.
  • Work closely with Information Security, Azure Cloud, Network, and Infrastructure teams to maintain a secure, resilient, and high-performing SAP landscape.
  • Participates in SAP related projects (releases and/or rollouts) and conducts requirement gathering, fit/gap analysis, provide design and high-level solution
  • Ensure all business-critical and financially significant SAP jobs are scheduled, monitored, and executed successfully. Oversee end-to-end integration monitoring and proactively resolve issues to maintain business continuity and system stability.
  • Provide Level 3 (L3) support for live SAP environments across global operations and drive root cause analysis, incident resolution, and problem management for critical production issues.
  • Ensures solution consistency and assists in facilitating the change leadership interventions within functional area and contributes to the Design Authority process by assessing impact of the new requests on the core solution.
  • Focus on continuous improvement, keeping up with industry and proactively advising the business of new capabilities that can help them support the company growth and strategy.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education: Bachelor’s / Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, IT or related subject preferred.
  • Licenses/ Certifications: SAP Certifications related to Development/System Integrations/Administration would be preferred. ITIL Qualifications.
  • Experience: 10+ years of SAP technical experience, with 3–5+ years of experience leading SAP technical teams.
  • This role will be based in Pune hybrid work model - 2 days working from office.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP ECC and S/4HANA implementations and support. Strong experience in SAP development and integration technologies.
  • Strong experience in ABAP Development (OOABAP, RICEF), IDoc, RFC, OData, REST/SOAP services, Enhancements and forms (Adobe/SmartForms), DevOps tools and transport management is desired.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with SAP HANA (CDS, AMDP), SAP Fiori/UI5, SAP BTP (extensions, integration) would be good.
  • Experience in S/4HANA implementation or migration projects. Knowledge / experience in the following areas: SAP PI - Process Integration-L3, PI, FTP, EDI, other integration technologies required. SAP Charm and Basis.
  • Experience in information systems, applications – including SAP (SD, MM, WM, PP, and FI/CO), and project management, preferably in regulated life science industry.
  • Functional knowledge within functional area of SAP ECC6 EHP-7 or later a must, experience of HANA preferred. Experience in governing cross-functional solutions and ability to manage processes end-to-end.
  • Experience in a Validated/ Regulated industry and/or medical device company preferred. Strong vendor and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Solid functional and technical expertise in SAP business processes and operating models. Ability to collaborate effectively with globally distributed, cross-cultural teams.
  • Working knowledge of Java and/or ABAP programming. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Collaborative, team-oriented mindset
  • Detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Understanding of software development standards, processes, and QA practices
