Job DescriptionRole Overview
We are seeking a technical compliance engineer to lead Bose’s Ecodesign / Sustainable Design compliance domain and ensure emerging design impactful regulations are translated into clear, actionable engineering requirements and integrated into product development decisions with sufficient lead time to protect market access.
Ecodesign requirements are increasingly moving beyond isolated “battery” or “packaging” obligations and are creating a broader set of sustainable design requirements that cut across disciplines and product categories. Success in this role requires strong systems thinking and cross functional influence to connect regulatory intent to engineering implementation across hardware, materials, packaging, and lifecycle considerations.
This role partners closely with Legal under Bose’s shared responsibility model for monitoring and interpretation, and collaborates with existing domain owners (e.g., Product Safety, Materials Compliance, Energy Efficiency, etc.) to ensure integrated and consistent technical implementation.
Key Responsibilities
1) Ecodesign Domain Ownership and Technical Direction
• Own the technical compliance perspective for the Ecodesign / Sustainable Design domain and provide clear guidance that product development teams can implement
• Ensure Ecodesign requirements that cut across commodities and product categories are consistently interpreted and communicated as engineering requirements
2) Translate Regulations into Engineering Requirements (Design Impactful Focus)
• Distill complex regulatory requirements into clear engineering expectations and design guidance, including examples such as:
- minimum recycled content requirements
- design for recyclability performance criteria
- design for reusability
- minimization of packaging empty space (void space)
- user replaceability requirements (e.g., batteries)
• Identify deltas between current product/packaging designs and emerging requirements and translate those deltas into actionable inputs for programs
3) Cross Discipline Integration (Systems Thinking as the Method)
• Integrate Ecodesign requirements across engineering functions and existing compliance domains so obligations do not fall through gaps when requirements span safety, materials, energy efficiency, packaging, serviceability, documentation, or labeling
• Work with domain owners to ensure Ecodesign-related requirements are clearly defined and appropriately owned for execution
4) Partner with Legal on Monitoring and Interpretation
• Partner with Legal to support proactive monitoring and interpretation of Ecodesign regulatory developments, consistent with Bose’s shared responsibility model
• Help ensure emerging requirements are identified early enough to inform design decisions with appropriate lead time
5) Enable Execution Through Clear Inputs
• Provide the technical requirements, artifacts, and guidance needed for compliance execution teams to support certification/registration and compliance documentation activities when Ecodesign requirements drive new documentation/labeling obligations
• This role provides technical direction and integrated requirements; program level decisions and prioritization sit with compliance leadership; execution/tracking sits with compliance PM resources
• Resolve cross-domain technical ambiguity that may block execution, ensuring program teams have clear direction on how to proceed
6) Domain Development and Continuous Improvement
• Develop and maintain Ecodesign requirements, technical guidance, and frameworks to enable consistent application across programs
• Partner with domain engineers and program teams to ensure consistent interpretation and implementation of Ecodesign requirements across product development efforts
• Clarify complex or ambiguous cross-domain topics where requirements are not yet fully defined or operationalized
• Continuously evolve the Ecodesign compliance domain based on regulatory developments, implementation experience, and lessons learned
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field
• 5-10 years of experience in product compliance, engineering, or related technical roles
• Domain ownership with systems thinking — Ability to lead a cross disciplinary compliance domain that inherently spans multiple engineering areas
• Regulatory interpretation to technical translation — Ability to work with Legal to extract technical obligations from complex requirements and express them as clear engineering requirements
• Cross functional influence — Ability to align engineering, packaging, sourcing, service, and compliance stakeholders without direct authority
• Clarity and precision — Ability to distill complex inputs into crisp guidance, requirements, and decision support artifacts
• Proactive mindset — Ability to operate with long lead time awareness so design impactful requirements are integrated early enough to avoid late churn
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with EU regulatory frameworks relevant to Ecodesign / sustainable design (e.g., batteries regulation, packaging regulation, broader Ecodesign obligations) and translating those into product design requirements
• Exposure to multiple compliance domains (e.g., safety, materials, energy efficiency) and cross discipline integration
• Familiarity with organizational processes for regulatory monitoring/interpretation and how technical compliance partners with Legal
Success Profile
• Ecodesign requirements are translated into clear, actionable engineering guidance that programs can implement without ambiguity
• Design impactful regulatory changes are identified early enough to inform product architecture, packaging design, and serviceability decisions with appropriate lead time
• Cross discipline Ecodesign obligations are integrated consistently across stakeholders and do not fall through gaps between existing compliance domains
• Resolve cross-domain technical ambiguity to enable consistent and scalable execution across programs
