About the role:

The Process Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining the site’s Process Safety Management (PSM) program, ensuring that all processes involving hazardous materials or energy are designed, operated, and maintained safely. The role provides technical leadership, risk assessment expertise, and governance to prevent loss‑of‑containment events, fires, explosions, and other process-related incidents.

Role Responsibilities:

Program Ownership and Governance

  • Define, maintain, and lead the site’s Process Safety Management program in alignment with corporate EHS, Engineering, and regulatory requirements.

  • Serve as the owner of Process Safety training curricula, ensuring competency development across Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance teams.

  • Develop and maintain process safety procedures, standards, and guidance documents (e.g., PSM elements, safe operating limits, process hazard controls).

Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Controls

  • Conduct or facilitate process hazard analyses (PHAs) using methodologies such as HAZOP, What If, FMEA, LOPA, and Bowtie.

  • Ensure robust risk assessments for new processes, modifications, and abnormal operations.

  • Define and validate basis of safety for processes involving flammable, reactive, or toxic materials.

  • Support the development and verification of Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) and Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) in accordance with IEC 61511.

  • Compliance, Assurance, and Change Management

  • Ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations related to process safety, including PSM, COMAH/Seveso, ATEX, DSEAR, and other applicable frameworks.

  • Lead or support Process Safety Reviews during design, commissioning, and startup of new or modified processes.

  • Participate in and provide expert input to Management of Change (MoC) processes involving process equipment, chemicals, or operating conditions.

  • Conduct gap assessments using process safety standards and develop action plans to close identified gaps.

Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement

  • Perform regular gemba walks and field verifications to identify process safety hazards, deviations, and improvement opportunities.

  • Monitor and analyze process safety KPIs, incident trends, and near misses to drive continuous improvement.

  • Lead or support root cause investigations for process safety incidents and ensure effective corrective and preventive actions.

  • Collaboration and Cross-Functional Support

  • Work closely with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance to ensure process safety requirements are embedded in design, operation, and maintenance activities.

  • Collaborate with Maintenance to ensure the reliability and integrity of critical equipment, including pressure relief devices, instrumentation, alarms, and containment systems.

  • Actively contribute to the regional/global Process Safety Community of Practice (CoP) by sharing learnings, best practices, and technical insights.

Audits and Technical Expertise

  • Provide expert support during internal and external audits, regulatory inspections, and corporate reviews.

  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry standards, emerging risks, and best practices in process safety.

Candidate profile:

  • Strong understanding of process safety principles, hazardous materials behavior, and risk assessment methodologies.

  • Knowledge of PSM frameworks, regulatory requirements, and industry standards (e.g., IEC 61511, API, NFPA).

  • Ability to interpret and develop process safety documentation such as P&IDs, PFDs, relief system design, and operating envelopes.

  • Skilled in facilitating cross-functional workshops and influencing stakeholders at all levels.

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify hazards and propose practical, risk‑based solutions.

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 4-6 years in process safety.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • NEBOSH IGC Certified

  • TUV Approved
