What you’ll do

As a Principal Engineer for Commercial and Institutional (C&I) Banking, you'll be responsible for defining the architecture, engineering, AI, infrastructure and data strategies and capabilities that ensure our transformation plans support our long-term strategic objectives. You'll also influence the development of organisational-level strategies and identify transformational opportunities across both business and technology domains.

In addition, you'll lead multi-faceted disciplines, including Communities of Practice, while defining and communicating the current, resultant, and target-state architecture, engineering, and data model for CIO. You’ll ensure these capabilities are aligned with, and informed by, our broader strategy, delivering the right outcomes for the bank. You will also be responsible for defining the best practices, standards and guardrails for AI engineering and driving consistent application across technology

You’ll also be responsible for:

  • Leading complex and technically challenging transformations, while coordinating design and platform teams across multiple domains
  • Creating and amending standards and policies that are adhered to by the C&I domain, ensuring the business operates in line with industry-leading practices and emerging trends
  • Managing and growing the engineering and delivery function, including setting standards and policies across these areas and aligning them with strategic outcomes
  • Drive consistent use of approved AI tools to improve delivery and quality across the C&I domain while ensuring safe, secure and responsible use of AI
  • Assessing compliance with domain standards across engineering, foundational platform management, innovation, managed service suppliers, testing, environments, and infrastructure
  • Ensuring the skilled workforce assigned to delivery teams has adequate capacity, capability, development opportunities, and appropriate remuneration
  • Working closely with business owners and the platform, programme, and service delivery teams across CIO to define the target state
The skills you’ll need

We’re looking for someone with knowledge of application architecture, engineering, data, and infrastructure architecture, as well as an in-depth knowledge across the remaining disciplines. You should also bring experience in distributed Agile delivery methodologies, together with a strong understanding of the DevOps work environment and related tools.

To succeed in this role, you must have a background working within an innovation-driven environment, supported by solid market awareness. Experience delivering infrastructure within a matrixed environment is also essential, along with a strong understanding of how to implement solutions into Tier 1 production services in a safe and controlled manner.

In addition, you’ll need:

  • To be a capable third-party engagement leader, with the ability to work effectively with multiple suppliers and the commercial acumen to deliver the best results for the bank
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical concepts to peers and management-level colleagues
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and building relationships with across external partners, technology, business, and operations
