Are you ready to drive engineering activities that will take Spectrum's telecommunications and signal processing systems to new heights? As a Principal Engineer I - Wireless/WiFi is a senior technical leader responsible for the architecture, design, and operational excellence of Charter's wireless access technologies, with a primary focus on WiFi and converged mobile wireless solutions. The role combines deep architectural leadership with hands-on operational stewardship-defining roadmaps, driving platform evolution, establishing design-to-operations standards, mentoring engineers, and partnering across product, engineering, operations, and vendor teams to deliver scalable, high-performance, and reliable customer experiences.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Design, implement, monitor, enhance and troubleshoot systems in assigned areas
  • Analyze and revise existing system logic difficulties and documentation as necessary
  • Test and review system designs
  • Provide engineering technical support and guidance to regional personnel and ensure all technical integration, changes, standards and documentation are met
  • Mentor and guide the work of technical staff
  • Review work plans and design and advise on improvements
  • Adhere to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable
  • Know, understand and follow company policy

What You'll Bring to Spectrum
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Master's or bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field or related work experience

Experience
  • 5+ years engineering work experience
  • 5+ years project management work experience

Skills
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Basic knowledge of related industry specifications and standards IEEE, ANSI, Fiber (Multimode, Single mode, UTP, etc.), Bridging, Switching, Routing, Ethernet and Transport technologies and protocols
  • Basic knowledge in network design, network architecture, protocols and network topology
  • Basic knowledge in TCP/IP and the OSI Model
  • Basic knowledge in using ticketing and software tools to support the current operations
  • Basic knowledge of network devices and basic network appliances
  • Basic knowledge of network designing software, such as Visio
  • Ability to perform duties in a very fast-paced environment and ability to learn new technology quickly
  • Ability to use personal computer and software applications

Preferred Qualifications
Education
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
  • Industry and vendor specific certifications and training preferred (Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, etc.)
  • Certified Wireless Network Expert (CWNE)
  • VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV

Skills
  • Knowledge of Spectrum products and services
  • Troubleshoot routing/switching/Firewall/Transport (Layers 1-7), DNS, DHCP, and IPv6; analyze live packet flows.
  • Experience in Wi-Fi or network operations with direct break/fix ownership in live environments (NOC/call center/carrier experience a plus).
  • Strong routing/switching fundamentals; deep OSI model knowledge (up to L7) and solid L1 understanding.
  • DNS, DHCP, IPv6, and packet-flow troubleshooting proficiency.
  • Working knowledge of AAA concepts and Linux command-line operations.
  • At least 1 year of automation with Ansible and/or Python.
  • Education: Equivalent experience valued; Bachelor's + 1-2 years NOC experience considered well
  • Carrier/ISP operations background; experience with broadband edge.
  • Vendor-agnostic wireless controller skills (e.g., Ruckus, Cisco, Aruba).
  • Load balancing and GSLB familiarity (e.g., A10, Anycast).
  • Observability tooling (Grafana, Splunk, Netscout) and strong service documentation habits.
  • Relevant networking/wireless certifications.

The base pay for this position generally is between
$110,800.00 and $196,400.00. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. We comply with local wage minimums and also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of other incentive-based compensation such as bonuses.
