Paralegal

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Client: United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Eastern District of Louisiana (EDLA)
Work Schedule: Full-Time | Monday–Friday | 40 Hours per Week | 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Work Arrangement: Onsite with situational telework authorized in accordance with agency policy
Travel: Occasional government-approved travel may be required for official business and training. Overtime may be required with prior approval.

Position Overview

Crossroads Talent Solutions is seeking an experienced Paralegal to provide comprehensive litigation and legal support services to the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Eastern District of Louisiana. This position directly supports Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by assisting with the preparation, organization, and management of criminal and civil litigation matters.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and experienced in preparing legal documents, maintaining case files, supporting trial preparation, and managing litigation support activities within a fast-paced legal environment. This role requires excellent communication skills, strong technical proficiency, and the ability to work independently while maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive government information.

Key Responsibilities

The Paralegal will provide a wide range of litigation support services, including but not limited to:

Litigation Support
  • Prepare, review, edit, and process complex legal documents, including:
    • Complaints
    • Motions
    • Pleadings
    • Orders
    • Answers
    • Subpoenas
    • Criminal complaints
    • Search warrants
    • Affidavits
    • Judgments
    • Summonses
    • Grand Jury subpoenas
    • Applications
    • Notices
  • Obtain information from case files, law enforcement agencies, and other government sources to complete legal documentation.
  • Review legal filings for completeness, formatting, and compliance with court requirements.
  • Independently determine required documentation based on case status and litigation needs.
  • Draft correspondence and legal communications requiring knowledge of legal terminology and federal procedures.
Trial Preparation
  • Assist Assistant United States Attorneys throughout all phases of litigation.
  • Prepare comprehensive trial notebooks.
  • Organize exhibits and evidence.
  • Assemble witness and exhibit lists.
  • Prepare jury instructions.
  • Assist with courtroom presentations.
  • Coordinate trial logistics and attorney support.
Legal Research
  • Verify legal citations and statutory references using both traditional and electronic legal research resources.
  • Prepare tables of authorities and tables of contents for briefs.
  • Ensure citations are accurate and consistent with applicable legal standards.
Case Management
  • Maintain electronic and physical case files.
  • Open, update, and close cases within automated case management systems.
  • Monitor litigation deadlines and maintain attorney calendars.
  • Track:
    • Court filings
    • Hearings
    • Trials
    • Scheduling conferences
    • Interviews
  • Organize records for storage and disposition in accordance with DOJ procedures.
Administrative Support
  • Provide day-to-day administrative support to Assistant United States Attorneys.
  • Answer telephones and greet visitors.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding pending and closed cases.
  • Maintain legal reference files.
  • Assemble affidavits, exhibits, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements, including transportation, lodging, and itineraries.
Victim/Witness Coordination
  • Coordinate with Victim/Witness Specialists.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Justice victim rights policies.
  • Communicate with appropriate parties regarding victim and witness issues.
Financial & Litigation Support
  • Process litigation expenses.
  • Review invoices for payment.
  • Track litigation-related expenditures.
  • Coordinate submissions to the budget office.
Technical Support
  • Produce professional legal documents utilizing:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Excel
    • Database applications
    • Desktop publishing software
  • Create charts, graphs, spreadsheets, and trial presentation materials.
  • Prepare enlarged exhibits, photographs, videos, and other courtroom presentation materials using scanners and graphics equipment.
Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

  • Experience supporting attorneys in a litigation environment.
  • Strong understanding of legal terminology, court procedures, and federal legal documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Professional demeanor with excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Technical Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Access
  • Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Electronic databases and case management systems

Preferred:

  • Experience with Relativity eDiscovery software.
  • Experience reviewing legal documents such as Motions and Briefs.
  • Experience supporting federal litigation or Department of Justice legal operations.
Security Requirements

Selected candidates must be able to:

  • Successfully obtain and maintain a Department of Justice background investigation.
  • Meet DOJ residency requirements (generally residing in the United States for three of the previous five years).
  • Complete required confidentiality, ethics, cybersecurity, and security awareness training.
  • Sign all required nondisclosure and loyalty agreements.
  • Handle sensitive and law enforcement information in accordance with Department of Justice security requirements.
