Job Overview

We are seeking a talented and motivated Outfit Build Engineer to support the design, outfitting, and integration of autonomous surface vessels. This role will provide hands-on experience in vessel outfitting, equipment installation, and advanced autonomous technologies, driving impact in defense innovation. As an Outfit Build Engineer, you'll interface remotely with our design engineering teams in Austin while owning the hands-on oversight of equipment installation, systems integration, interior/exterior outfitting, and issue resolution at the shipyard.

Responsibilities

· Assist in the design, analysis, and installation of outfit systems for ASVs including HVAC, piping, deck equipment, interior structures, mission systems, and equipment layout optimization

· Collaborate with engineering teams to perform CAD modeling, analysis, and system optimization

· Operate as liaison between engineering, drafting, and production teams to resolve technical challenges during construction

· Identify and resolve non-conformances, lead root cause analysis, and drive resolution via IRBs (Issue Review Boards) and rework plans

· Lead and coordinate Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)—ensure traceability, communication, implementation, and verification

· Support the integration of autonomous navigation and control systems into vessel designs

· Participate in design reviews and provide technical input on system architecture and performance

· Support documentation including technical drawings, specifications, test procedures, and as-built records for internal use, regulatory bodies, and client presentations

· Manage CAD models to document as-built changes made during ship construction

· Oversee installation of mechanical equipment, piping systems, ventilation, hatches, access panels, ladders, and deck fittings

· Perform fit-checks, clearance verification, accessibility assessments, and functional testing of installed outfit systems

Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related field

· Familiarity with maritime industry standards including ABS outfit requirements, HVAC standards, piping codes (ASME B31), and US Coast Guard regulations

· Strong fundamentals in mechanical systems, piping design, HVAC, equipment installation, and marine outfit practices

· Experience working in a shipyard environment, particularly with outfit trades (piping, HVAC, joiner work, deck equipment)

· Strong knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Rhino, NX)

· Deep familiarity with interpreting outfit drawings, isometric piping diagrams, equipment installation drawings, and P&IDs

· Understanding of piping materials, fittings, valves, pumps, ventilation systems, and marine outfit components

· Experience with spatial coordination, clash detection, and design-for-maintainability principles

· Strong communication skills across engineers, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, installers, quality teams, and leadership

· Comfortable working in an industrial shipyard environment with hands-on involvement in equipment installation and fit-up
