Job Summary:
The Nurse Extern is a nursing student who works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide safe high-quality patient care, support clinical operations, and apply the knowledge and skills they have been taught in their nursing program. This role is designed to provide undergraduate nursing students with an extended clinical experience to further develop confidence with clinical decision-making, delegation, prioritization, communication, and the patient experience, while establishing valuable professional relationships.
Job Requirements:
Formal Education / Training:
1. Ongoing enrollment in an accredited nursing program located within middle Tennessee (ADN or BSN).
2. Successful completion of a basic nursing skills course within the accredited nursing program.
3. Enrolled in the final two semesters of the accredited nursing program (Nurse Extern II only).
4. Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire.
Workplace Experience:
Prior patient care delivery in an acute care setting preferred.
Equipment and Skills Training:
Bed Scales; Gait Belts; Dinamap; Pneumatic Tube System; Telemetry; Nurse Call System; Fax; Network Computer System; Bed Alarms; Specialty Beds; Bladder Scanner; Oxygen Set Up.
Physical Environment:
Medical-Surgical Unit with patient population start at 18 years of age.
Rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Physical Effort:
1. Able to communicate in English verbally and legibly.
2. Able to stand/work for up to twelve hours a day.
3. Able to lift with assistance up to 250 lbs.
Skills Required
