Job Description

Mechanical Engineer – Innovate at the Forefront of X-Ray Technology
Varex Imaging is a global technology leader in X-ray imaging, developing advanced solutions used in medical diagnostics, industrial inspection, and security systems. With a strong international presence and high-tech product portfolio, we’re pushing the boundaries of what's possible in imaging.
Varex Imaging is the world’s leading supplier of Photon Counting Detectors, and we are hiring more resources due to expanding portfolio and growing volumes.

Our team develops photon-counting detector technology, one of the most advanced and rapidly evolving areas of X-ray imaging. We are currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer who wants to take ownership of the mechanical design of next-generation imaging products. You will work across the full product lifecycle, from concept development through to production, collaborating closely with experts in electronics, systems, manufacturing, and product management. In this role you will be a key player within our R&D organization and will take an active part in shaping our future products and technical solutions.

The position is permanent, located in Espoo, Finland, and employment can begin immediately or as soon as a suitable candidate is found. We follow a hybrid working model, which involves regular on-site collaboration in Espoo.

As a Mechanical Engineer on our team, you will have the opportunity to work hands-on with the development of our next-generation X-ray detectors — from requirements definition all the way to production handover and through to sustaining engineering. We are looking for an adaptive engineer who thrives at the center of complex cross‑functional programs, collaborating closely with electronics, systems, manufacturing, and product teams, and effectively balancing performance, cost, schedule, and manufacturability.

Your role will include:

  • Own the mechanical architecture and detailed design of our X-ray detectors.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, detailed drawings and BOMs in SolidWorks; manage mechanical documentation throughout release and ECO processes.
  • Plan and execute V&V for mechanical subsystems.
  • Design manufacturing jigs & fixtures for in-house production teams.
  • Collaborate closely with electronics, firmware, systems, manufacturing, product, and program management teams.
  • Work closely with procurement team to identify, assess, and qualify suppliers.
  • Support prototyping, pilot builds and testing; iterate designs based on feedback from testing, manufacturing and customers.

What we are looking for:

  • 5+ years of relevant mechanical design experience with a track record of bringing products from concept to production. Exceptional candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or a comparable 3D CAD platform.
  • Experience designing parts for a variety of manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication and additive manufacturing.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to coordinate technical requirements across multidisciplinary teams in both onsite and remote environments.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.

Advantageous:

  • Experience designing enclosures for electronics with high thermal loads, EMC considerations, and ingress protection requirements.
  • Understanding of thermal management techniques for electronics (convection, conduction, forced air, liquid cooling).
  • Experience performing FEA and thermal simulations.
  • Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis.

What We Offer

Joining Varex Imaging’s photon counting team means stepping into a role where every innovation you contribute has real-world impact.

  • Build deep expertise in one of the fastest-growing areas of imaging technology while working alongside world-class experts in photon-counting detector development.
  • Flat hierarchy.
  • The competitive salary ranges from approx. 55 000--65 000 EUR/annual.
  • Collaborate with experts across our global engineering organization.
  • Onsite R&D and manufacturing facilities
  • Professional development and training opportunities.
  • Local benefits and perks (for example sport/culture vouchers, bonus plan and mobile phone benefit).
