We are now looking for master students within engineering and physics that are interested in doing their thesis project at our Battery Competence Center, Advanced Development Department.
This thesis project is exclusively available to master’s students at Linköping University. As part of a collaboration between Linköping University’s Department of Vehicular Systems (FS) and Husqvarna’s Battery Competence Center.
Husqvarna’s robotic lawnmowers have significant advantages: their owners save a lot of time, the lawn quality becomes very good, and the robots are very quiet and consume much less energy than conventional lawnmowers.
The objective
To avoid that time for lawn care is lost due to unexpected battery failures, the owner shall be informed in advance when the battery needs to be replaced. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the remaining battery lifetime. The prediction of the remaining lifetime shall also avoid that batteries are replaced earlier than necessary. Without such a prediction, the owner of a robotic mower who wants to be sure to avoid an unexpected failure will in most cases replace the battery when it still has a significant remaining lifetime.
This thesis project shall investigate possibilities to create algorithms for such a prediction.
Proper area of education
Several engineering disciplines as well as physics may form a suitable background for this thesis project.
A general knowledge of battery technology and especially of the properties and behavior of lithium ion battery cells is required.
The student also needs to be familiar with numerical mathematics and should have implemented a few numerical algorithms as part of his/her education or previous experience.
Knowledge of Bayesian statistics and machine learning can be a merit depending on how to best evaluate the data.

Husqvarna’s robotic lawnmowers have been sending information about their batteries to the cloud for several years. Possibly promising algorithms and the available data shall be reviewed in the first half of this thesis. In the second half, the student shall implement an algorithm and test it on a selected dataset.
This project is a cooperation between the department of Vehicular Systems (FS) at Linköping university and the Battery Competence Center (BCC) at Husqvarna AB
