About this opportunity:
As new generations of mobile networks become even more sophisticated, requirements on the software used to run and build them increase. Traditional software environments are lacking reproducibility and rely upon many implicit and undocumented assumptions. Reproducibility is important in many ways. For example, security concerns of knowing what software you are running and being able to generate SBOMs (Software Bill of Material). It is also important to developer productivity in order to be able to reproduce bugs in both field and in development environment. It is also important to solve the "it works on my machine" problem.
What you will do:
The aim of the thesis is to evaluate how technologies like Nix/NixOS can be utilized in Ericssons current software development environment. Specifically how it can be integrated with the build systems we use like bazel.
  • Compare Nix, devcontainers and traditional approaches for development environments and CI
  • Evaluate threat models for Nix compared to Docker
  • Compare combining Nix+Bazel compared to plain Bazel for dependeny management
  • Explore linking optimizations made possible by Nix.

The skills you bring:
  • Master's student in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • You have an interest in software development, build systems, or development environments.
  • You are curious about technologies such as Nix, NixOS, Bazel, Docker, or devcontainers.
  • You enjoy investigating technical problems and evaluating different approaches.
