Kumba Iron Ore               

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As Manager Reward your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment:

  • Demonstrate behaviour aligned with health, safety, and environmental standards and the Group’s values.
  • Participate in relevant safety audits, inspections, and observations and address issues to demonstrate safety leadership.

Design of strategy, policy, and governance guidelines:

  • Design rewards and benefits strategy for Kumba in conjunction with AA plc.
  • Contribute to developing and implementing reward policies and procedures across Kumba to ensure alignment with strategy and business objectives.
  • Act as process owner for specified reward activities to ensure principles and guidelines are created and followed by all Operating Units.
  • Compile, implement and manage international assignment policies to ensure employee satisfaction and business objectives are achieved.
  • Develop and review housing policies.

Manage and ensure accurate, smooth remuneration processes and annual review cycles:

  • Drive the completion of the annual reward cycle, including recommendations for annual increases or changes to reward packages at both a policy (annual budget increase) and individual level (new appointments, promotions, etc.).
  • Ensure tax legislation compliance and adherence to remuneration governance principles.
  • Manage share scheme portfolio and STI.
  • Contribute to the design, application and implementation of practical reward tools and processes to aid business managers in the consistent and fair reward of their employees at Operating Units.
  • Ensure the coordination, administration and management of all international assignments to comply with applicable legislation whilst applying best practice methodology.

Manage and ensure consistency in all benefits within Kumba:

  •  
  • Ensure the allocation of shares and bonuses aligns with applicable legislation and standards for both bargaining and non-bargaining categories of employees.
  • Conduct quarterly housing meetings with Operating Units.
  • Ensure housing reporting and compliance across Operating Units.
  • Ensure Kumba has competitive, best-practice remuneration practices:
  • Update the company and managers on tax legislation.
  • Benchmark salaries against industry.

Conduct market trends and competitiveness analysis:

  •  
  • Grow the reward capability within Kumba.
  • Develop reward capability across the Group by identifying needs, conducting training, and sharing information to support reward policies and processes.
  • Provide advice and guidance to all stakeholders (including Operating Units) on specific pay and benefit issues, supporting the implementation of frameworks and policies to ensure compliance with guidelines and processes.

Job evaluation and role library management:

  • Ensure that all managers understand the AAPlc Global Banding Framework.
  • Manage job evaluations and ensure consistency across Operating Units and with AAPlc.

Manage and develop the reward and benefit team:

  • Optimise human resources in a way that the section as a whole delivers maximum output.
  • Conduct effective bi-annual performance and development discussions.
  • Ensure superior performance is recognised and underperformance in the team is addressed.
  • Provide thought leadership that will ensure sustainable, engaged and motivated employees.

Budget and Cost Management:

  • Manages budget and cost control, i.e. organises the section's expenditure to ensure adequate cost controls/savings.
  • Develop tools and reports to oversee group-wide expenditure on learning & development.

This role is in People & Organisation (P&O) department on a Band 5 (E-Lower) level reporting to the Executive Head of People & Organisation.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • Honours Degree in Human Resources/ Industrial Psychology (NQF8)
  • Valid SA Drivers Licence: Code B

Technical Knowledge

  • 8-10 years of relevant experience and 5 years of experience in a P&O leadership role.
  • Strong specialist experience in Remuneration and Reward.
  • Understand, apply, and shape the Anglo American reward strategy and principles to attract, engage, and retain employees by appropriate legislative frameworks, broader external factors, and business strategy.
  • Organisational knowledge of processes and functions, especially Talent
  • Management and Learning & Development.
