Position Description:

To provide support for and administer a variety of legal activities as assigned and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and other requirements on behalf of Delta Dental of Michigan or its affiliates and subsidiaries.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Researches federal, state, and local statutes, pending legislation, administrative rules or decisions, and/or regulatory requirements. Drafts and or makes recommendations regarding necessary changes to departmental and company policies or procedures as a result.

  • Prepares, drafts and tracks contract templates, including but not limited to NDAs, confidentiality agreements, authorizations and waivers.

  • Investigates, researches, tracks, and drafts responses to inquiries or complaints received from external regulatory agencies.

  • Investigates, analyzes, researches, tracks and logs potential privacy and security incidents that are reported to the Legal department. Drafts and/or makes recommendations regarding necessary customer and regulatory notifications regarding such incidents.

  • Assists with researching, drafting, and filing immigration applications and related documents for company employees and contractors.

  • Researches, tracks, logs, and monitors company’s intellectual property portfolio. Assists with the preparation of all intellectual property filings and coordinates the gathering of all necessary information for such filings with appropriate business users throughout the company.

  • Drafts or makes recommendations regarding the preparation and submission of miscellaneous legal documents, correspondence and responses as necessary to assist with department functions.

  • Assists with researching, drafting, and filing documents and materials in connection with litigation, arbitration and bankruptcy proceedings. Serves as a liaison for other departments within the company regarding same.

  • Researches and analyzes federal, state, and local statutes and regulations, legal opinions and other court or regulatory decisions.

  • Drafts routine legal documents for review and use by attorneys.

  • Coordinates with appropriate business users throughout the company to obtain information and documents required for legal and regulatory filings, or for other needs of the department.

  • Categorizes and interprets information and data.

  • Reviews, analyzes, organizes, manages and files reports, discovery responses, pleadings, exhibits, witness materials, records and other documents.

  • Performs administrative duties inherent in litigation or other department activities (calendaring appointments and deadlines, organizing files, managing logistics, etc.)

Perform other related assigned duties as necessary to complete the Primary Job Responsibilities as described above.

Minimum Requirements:

Position requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration, legal studies or a related field and three years of experience researching and analyzing legal or compliance requirements and/or preparing legal documents in response, preferably in the life & health insurance industry. Will accept any suitable combination of education, training, or experience.

Position requires knowledge of legal research tools, such as NILS and Westlaw; high attention to detail and ability to process large quantities of detailed information with high levels of accuracy; ability to analyze information, problem solve, and provide alternative solutions and recommendations; ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks; applicable knowledge of motions, discovery, evidence, litigation documentation, court rules and procedures, practices etc.; experience managing medium to large-scale document productions; proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with document review software and databases; experience with contract management systems; strong verbal and written communication skills; positive attitude that fits with Company culture; strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills; the ability to work independently and as part of a team; and the ability to solve problems using independent judgment.
