The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a talented Legal Assistant for our Fairfax, VA staff counsel law office.
As a dedicated Legal Assistant (BI/UM), you will provide assistance with legal work which is reviewed and approved by the supervising attorney. This includes but is not limited to research, contract administration, document preparation, and trial preparation.
The legal work performed will include personal injury auto defense law, including motor vehicle accident claims, insurance coverage matters, liability disputes, settlements, and litigation.
Legal Assistants have a flexible work environment where most of your time will be spent at the staff counsel’s office and working from home. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:
Applies foundational knowledge to assist in providing support for the investigative process of a trial by gathering documents and information for legal assignments.
Assists with research documents and preparation of reports under supervision.
May assist with administrative tasks to include, but not limited to, calendar responsibilities to ensure all deadlines are met; check writing, check requesting, copying, and handling mail as necessary to ensure continuous business operations.
May assist in facilitating the exchange of information between attorneys and outside counsel.
Communicates with USAA members as needed to obtain or share information.
Applies foundational knowledge to resolve routine issues, collaborates with team members on problem-solving, and identifies situations that require escalation.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
Up to 1 year of experience in legal support or related experience to include multi-taking in a fast past and complex business environment.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
What sets you apart:
2+ years of experience as a Legal Secretary, Executive Assistant, or Administrative Assistant supporting attorneys in a personal injury law firm or litigation practice, including experience utilizing court e-filing platforms and systems in Virginia (VA), Washington, D.C. (DC), and Maryland (MD).
Experience managing complex attorney calendars, scheduling depositions, mediations, independent medical examinations (IMEs), client appointments, and coordinating case-related meetings.
Strong administrative support skills, including preparing and proofreading legal documents, managing correspondence, maintaining case files, obtaining medical records and bills, and serving as a primary point of contact for clients, medical providers, insurance carriers, and opposing counsel. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and legal case management systems preferred.
US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $57,970 - $103,870.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
