What success looks like in this role:
Lead Security Architect – Federal Government Cloud Migration Programme
Location: Australia (Customer Site) – Canberra, onsite
Security Clearance: NV1 Security Clearance (Mandatory)
Role Purpose
The Lead Security Architect owns the security architecture for a wave-based application migration and modernisation programme delivered into a highly secure federal government environment, working alongside the Project Delivery Lead, who holds ultimate ownership of the programme overall, and the Lead Cloud Migration Architect, who owns the technical outcome across application, infrastructure and cloud, data, and business architecture.
This role ensures the migration approach, target architecture, and tooling/AI usage align with the customer's security policies and procedures and with the Australian Government's security and AI governance frameworks, including the Information Security Manual (ISM), the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), the Essential Eight, and IRAP assurance practices. The Lead Security Architect engages closely with the customer's cybersecurity leadership and architecture teams, represents Unisys in the customer's security governance forums, and acts as the programme's security subject matter expert, providing expertise into the assessment, strategy, migration planning, and architecture functions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Professional Experience
Extensive years of experience in security architecture, cybersecurity consulting, or security engineering, with demonstrated depth and breadth across cloud, infrastructure, identity, network, and endpoint security.
Proven experience delivering security architecture for complex, large-scale application migration programmes to Azure and AWS target clouds.
Experience working within government or other highly regulated environments, including experience supporting Australian Government
Experience conducting security assessments, architecture reviews, and remediation planning, and supporting projects through design, implementation, and operational transition.
Track record of owning the security architecture outcome of a customer-facing programme alongside a delivery lead and a technical/enterprise architecture lead, with a clear division of accountability between the three.
Technical Knowledge
Strong understanding of the Information Security Manual (ISM), the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), the Essential Eight, and security assurance practices, including IRAP.
Practical knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure and AWS), infrastructure, networking, endpoint security, and identity technologies, including modern authentication and privileged access management.
Working knowledge of Australian Government AI governance, including the Policy for the Responsible Use of AI in Government, its AI Impact Assessment Tool, the National AI Centre's Guidance for AI Adoption, and the National AI Plan for the Australian Public Service, sufficient to assess proposed AI tooling for a federal government customer.
Familiarity with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules (CPRs), the Privacy Act 1988, and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA) as they bear on security and data-handling obligations.
Leadership and Stakeholder Skills
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills across business, technical, and executive audiences, including CISOs and governance boards.
Ability to lead and develop a team of security architects while remaining hands-on with technical detail.
Strong judgement in balancing security risk, delivery pace, and innovation, particularly when assessing new tooling or AI capability for a security-conscious customer.
