The Systems Engineer leads the technical planning, integration, verification, and lifecycle management of an integrated command-and-control (C2) capability. The position is responsible for ensuring radars, sensors, effectors, communications systems, data services, and software applications operate as an interoperable system-of-systems that supports shared awareness, timely command decisions, coordinated action, and end-to-end battle management.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Systems Architecture and Integration
Assesses the integrated C2 architecture for radars, sensors, effectors, communications networks, data services, and software applications. Ensures the architecture supports shared situational awareness, a common operational picture, and end-to-end battle management workflows.
Ensures counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) C2 capabilities are integrated within the broader integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) architecture. Ensures C-UAS operations contribute to and operate within the wider air defense battlespace, common operational picture, engagement-coordination framework, and command decision process.
Requirements and Battle Management Engineering
Develops and maintains battle management requirements supporting track correlation, threat evaluation, decision support, resource allocation, command execution, engagement assessment, and battle handover. Ensures requirements support the ability to identify and manage threats, maintain awareness across the operational environment, coordinate available assets, and execute authorized actions through the appropriate C2 processes.
Interoperability and Data Exchange
Manages interoperable interfaces and data exchanges among sensors, radars, C2 nodes, communications systems, effectors, software applications, and authorized mission partners. Ensures systems share timely, accurate, reliable, and usable information needed for command decisions, coordinated action, and seamless handover between systems, echelons, and mission partners.
Decision Support and Performance Assessment
Defines and assesses measures of performance for message latency, data completeness, track quality, track correlation, decision-support timeliness, command execution, engagement coordination, and battle handover. Evaluates factors that affect the accuracy, reliability, and operator usability of automated recommendations and C2 displays.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of systems engineering, including requirements analysis, architecture development, systems integration, interface management, verification and validation, configuration management, risk management, and lifecycle sustainment.
- Knowledge of C2 and battle management concepts, including shared situational awareness, common operational picture development, sensor-to-C2 data exchange, track correlation, decision support, command execution, engagement coordination, and battle handover.
- Ability to analyze complex system-of-systems interoperability, performance, timing, latency, and data-quality issues.
- Ability to develop technical requirements, interface documentation, test plans, performance measures, risk assessments, and decision-ready engineering products.
- Ability to coordinate technical work across operational, engineering, acquisition, cybersecurity, logistics, test, and contractor organizations.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
