Project Title: New amine solvents for CO2 post-combustion capture
Goals and objectives
To support Shell ambition in the Energy Transition, carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been identified as one of the major technical pillars. The CANSOLV CO2 capture process, integral part of the Shell Gas Processing technology portfolio, is positioned among the leading technologies in post-combustion CO2 capture. Through projects like SaskPower’s Boundary Dam in Canada, the technology has already been deployed at large scale (1 MTPA) in the most demanding type of applications. An ambitious Research & Development program supports continuous improvements of the process and its technical and commercial competitiveness. Although amine-based processes are considered state of the art, they have inherent limitations that prevent important cost reductions:
• The energy demand (low-pressure steam to the reboiler) is high.
• The amine solution tends to degrade over time. This has impacts on the cost of solvent refill and wastewater treatment.
• More and more stringent environmental regulations for VOCs emissions at stack require additional mitigation measures.
Project scope
This project will focus on the investigation of new amine-based solvent blends to be used in the existing CO2 capture process. In a first part of the project, experimental investigation will be performed at our research center, where the candidate will have to develop experimental strategies and protocols in collaboration with the researcher and the laboratory experimentalists. Several bench-scale and pilot units will be used for the screening and ranking of new solvents. Data analysis and reporting of the most relevant metrics will allow to rank them.
In parallel, the candidate will interact with computational chemistry experts in charge of developing a screening platform for new amine solvent blends. The computational approach has been validated with experimental data on mono-amines. The next step is to develop a model to design new blends of molecules. Based on the computational data and the outcome of the experimental investigation, new molecules will be recommended for further experimental testing in the future.
- undefined
The work location is the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam. The internship will be a blend of remote and in-person working, with regular interactions with the other researchers and laboratory experimentalists of the group.
Deliverables:
- Mid term and final report/presentation
- Results of this technical evaluation will be used for a preliminary techno-economic evaluation using the existing Cansolv process evaluation tool.
