Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all .
Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.
Join Our Team as an Embedded Systems Software Engineer Intern
Micron Technology Inc. is a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing. The Systems Integration Group (SIG) designs and manufactures internal equipment to give Micron a competitive position in the marketplace.
Our Equipment Software Design team is looking for a hands-on Embedded Systems Software Engineering Intern who enjoys working at the intersection of software, electronics, and complete system behavior. This intern will develop embedded software running on bare metal and embedded Linux as well as higher level interface software. You will work with other software engineers and other engineering fields to develop custom in-house semiconductor equipment from the ground up. This role requires an understanding of hardware behavior to build, debug, and optimize software that directly controls custom electronic systems.
This is not a purely software role. Successful candidates will have a foundation in both software and electronics and should enjoy understanding how the complete system works. You will routinely move between source code, device registers, schematics, datasheets, electrical signals, and lab equipment while developing and debugging systems.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and support embedded software in C, C++, Bash, and Python for bare-metal and RHEL-compatible Linux environments, including containerized applications.
  • Collaborate with software, electrical, controls, and mechanical engineers to develop new semiconductor manufacturing equipment and improve existing designs.
  • Debug hardware/software interactions using schematics, datasheets, register maps, and laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and SMUs to identify root causes of system-level issues.
  • Evaluate interactions among software, electronics, sensors, actuators, communications, controls, and mechanical systems, using measurements and engineering evidence to characterize system behavior.
  • Partner with New Product Introduction and Operations teams to transition equipment designs into manufacturing and use AI Assisted software engineering tools responsibly for activities such as code development, review, testing, debugging, and technical analysis.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be pursuing a BS or MS or equivalent experience in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field and graduate after September 2027.
  • Programming experience in C or C++, with familiarity working in Linux development environments and an understanding of fundamental software engineering concepts.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience demonstrating understanding of digital and analog circuits, computer architecture, and embedded systems.
  • Proven track record to read schematics and datasheets, plus general knowledge of oscilloscopes and DMMs.
  • Demonstrated interest in hardware/software integration through coursework, research, personal projects, robotics, embedded systems, internships, or similar experience, including curiosity about AI Assisted software engineering tools.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with embedded development tools and workflows such as Git, GCC/GNU toolchains, GDB, Make/CMake, Bash, and Linux.
  • Hands-on experience debugging hardware/software interactions using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or DMMs and interpreting schematics, datasheets, timing diagrams, or register maps.
  • Experience with one or more hardware interfaces such as GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB, or PCIe.
  • Understanding of microprocessor or microcontroller architecture, including memory-mapped I/O, interrupts, registers, memory, and peripheral devices.
  • Academic, personal, research, or internship experience involving hardware/software integration, including experience Using AI for code generation, review, testing, debugging, or technical analysis.
