Position Purpose

The primary purpose of the position is to provide role of hydropower engineer for the various ongoing hydropower projects in PNG . The candidate would be responsible for the design, project management and project coordination of various hydropower projects. The candidate also needs to to provide operation and business development support to the Regional Lead.

The incumbent will role model SMEC values, ethics and code of conduct and ensure all business activities are carried out in accordance with these guiding principles.

Key Accountabilities

Undertake desktop, pre-feasibility, feasibility, tender design and detailed design of Hydropower Projects.

Prepare specifications for a variety of engineering tasks related to the design, construction and/or rehabilitation of hydropower projects

Contribute to the commercial success of projects and the team.

Project coordination, project management and Project Operation Support.

Collaborate with appropriate team members, contributors and stakeholders to maintain quality, timeliness and co-ordination of project deliverables.

Contribute to the business development and proposal preparation.

Key Accountability 1: 1.       Undertake desktop, pre-feasibility, feasibility, tender design and detailed design of Hydropower Projects.

Key Activities:

  • Select the most appropriate scheme based on factors like elevation, terrain or topography.
  • Perform hydraulic analysis to size diversion weir, diversion conduit, spillway, sluice gates, ogee weir, and other related headworks structures.
  • Perform preliminary stability analysis for the dam/weir design
  • Prepare bill of quantities of project components and develop cost parameters.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities.

  • Re-work is minimised to an acceptable degree (degree to be agreed with supervisor);
  • Positive feedback from managers, clients and reviewers;
  • The appropriate technical standards have been identified, are consistently applied and comply with QA & HSE requirements;
  • Design and Reports
  • Zero non-conformances raised in internal and external audits;
  • SMEC BMS policies and procedures are adhered to.

Key Accountability 2: Prepare specifications for a variety of engineering tasks related to the design, construction and/or rehabilitation of hydropower projects

Key Activities:

  • Preparing Technical Specifications for various civil works for the hydropower projects.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineers for civil works that has interfaces with other disciplines.
  • Preparing Bill of Quantities and other contract documents.

  • Contributes to the professional development of team members.

Key Accountability 3: Contribute to the commercial success of projects and the team.

  • Fostering and maintaining good client relationships;
  • Contributing to the overall management and profitability of the discipline;
  • Actively enhancing SMEC’s market brand presence through ongoing professional activities;
  • Exercising initiative in the workplace ensuring completion of quality tasks on time and to budget;
  • Researching for alternative solutions via Internet and library resources to assist in ensuring that solutions both make commercial sense and meet the client’s requirements;
  • Demonstrating commercial awareness, providing regular progress reports.

  • It is apparent that a contribution has been made to the achievement of the team business plan and the project performance;
  • Acceptable utilisation rates are maintained, allowing for fee revenue as well as professional development and other non-chargeable activities;
  • Established relationships with new clients leading to new opportunities;

  • Actively engaging with the market, sharing technical content, building profile within the industry.

Key Accountability 4: Project coordination, project management and Project Operation Support.

Key Activities:

  • Coordination with Project team for successful delivery of the Project
  • Assist Project Managers in the Project delivery and documentation.
  • Provide operation support to the team lead and regional lead in the areas like recruitment, budgeting, country operation,  for the successful operation of dams and hydro business in PNG.

  • Company assurance processes to review and improve effectiveness of Compliance management within your area of responsibility are supported.

  • WHS risks associated with the local operations are understood and managed effectively;
  • Appropriate resources and processes are available within the ANZ Division for managing WHS effectively;
  • Information about WHS performance and incidents within the ANZ Division is reported and acted on in a timely way;
  • Company assurance processes to review and improve effectiveness of WHS management within the ANZ Division are supported.
