This position reports to:
Team Leader__
We are looking for a Functional Safety Specialist to lead and carry out risk analyses for our customers. The core of the role is HAZOP and LOPA studies, followed by SIL determination and the development of Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS). You will cover the first steps of the safety lifecycle according to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
You will work on projects of various sizes, mainly in the energy sector (power plants, heating plants, boiler houses), together with experienced engineers and project managers. Your work will have a direct impact on how safely the plants are operated.
What you will do
- Lead and scribe HAZOP studies – in workshops with the customer, you systematically review the process and identify possible deviations, their causes and consequences.
- Perform LOPA studies – you assess whether existing protection layers are sufficient and, if not, define which Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) are needed and at what SIL.
- Develop Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) according to IEC 61511 as the basis for Safety Instrumented System (SIS) design.
- Perform FMEA for critical equipment when required.
- Present results to the customer, including explaining risks and recommended measures to plant management.
- Work with process and design engineers to validate analysis results.
- Contribute to the development of ABB functional safety consulting services and to maintaining the quality management system.
What you bring
- University degree in a technical field, ideally electrical, power, automation, or chemical and process engineering.
- At least 3 years of experience in risk analysis, process control or functional safety.
- Hands-on experience with HAZOP and LOPA – as facilitator, scribe or active team member.
- Knowledge of the safety lifecycle according to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
- Understanding of control systems and instrumentation.
- English good enough to lead workshops and write technical reports.
- Ability to explain risks clearly to both engineers and management.
- Willingness to travel, including abroad.
Nice to have
- Experience in developing SRS.
- TÜV Functional Safety Engineer certificate or equivalent.
- Knowledge of power generation equipment (boilers, burners, turbines) and related standards, e.g. EN 50156-1, EN 298, NFPA 85.
- Experience with risk analysis software (e.g. PHA-Pro, exSILentia).

Skills Required
- Degree in Automation, Chemical or Process Engineering
- 5+ years of experience in Automation or Process industry (Oil & Gas, Chemical, Pharma)
- Experience performing risk assessments such as HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA and developing SIS documentation (SRS, SIL verification)
- Knowledge of Process and Functional Safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 62061, IEC 61513)
- Advanced level of English
- Willingness to travel abroad
- Knowledge of IEC 61131-3 PLC programming languages and distributed control systems (DCS) solutions
