Flavor Development Scientist (contractor)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

In Zwolle, the EU Sensory and Flavor Technology team is situated, for which we are recruiting:

Flavor Development Scientist (contractor)

We are looking for a candidate with experience in flavor application and/or dairy industry. You are challenged by putting all the flavor system pieces together in new product developments. The role will report into the Head of EU Sensory and Flavor Technology, works in close cooperation with the Product Development Scientists in EU (mainly Netherlands, Spain, Ireland) and other Flavor and Sensory Scientists in Zwolle, Columbus (USA) and Singapore.

As subject matter expert of flavor systems within Abbott Europe, you are responsible for;

New product development

• Develop flavor systems (flavor, color, sweeteners) for products produced in the EU region which best mask deficits of the base product and create a full balanced experience of the named flavor.
• Identify flavor development strategy suited to project priority and degree of matrix complexity.
• Issue pre-replicate flavor recommendations to product development teams and support research runs and experiments with other members of R&D.
• Contribute to base product organoleptic improvement research projects and collaborate with product developers to create a base which allows desired taste profile to be achieved.

Innovation

• Innovate within the world of flavors, colors and sweeteners applicable to Abbott Nutrition products by identifying opportunities for improvement and researching market trends and future needs.
• Identify ideal/target sensory profile for the final product using current products, competitor product and market product category review from internal sensory department or flavor industry partners.
• Inspire commercial teams with opportunities for new flavor insights and trends.

Other

• Maintain a flavor library of all flavors, colors and sweeteners available in the EU portfolio of Abbott nutrition
• Participate in professionally trained panels (descriptive panels) including shared responsibility for reporting and interpreting data generated by the descriptive panels.
• Support Sensory, Regional R&D, Plant, TPM, vendor and descriptive panelists training.
• Provide technical support to medical safety, consumer relations and regulatory groups by maintaining databases of information to flavor composition and regulatory compliance.
• Provide technical support to production facilities in subjects related to flavors and colorants.
• Support the R&D department in EHS, HACCP and other quality management system topics.

Educational background and Work Experience

• MSc Food Science/Chemistry or other relevant scientific field, preferably with work experience in flavor application or product development with affinity for sensory or BS in Food Science/Chemistry with 5+ years progressive and practical related experience sufficient to demonstrate equivalency.
• Technical experience with the application of flavors, colors, and sweeteners in consumer products (nutritional products a plus).
• No taste or smell dysfunctions or food allergies.
• Ability to serve multiple clients and adapt to various working styles.
• Excellent communication skills (Dutch and English, verbal and in writing)
• Be able to prioritize workload and meet challenging deadlines
