About this opportunity:
Imagine helping to define what comes after 5G - not just faster networks, but smarter ones. Networks that sense the world around them, adapt in real time, and enable interactions between people, machines, and industries that we can barely picture today. That future is being built right now, and at Ericsson Research in Gothenburg, you could be part of building it.
For Spring 2027, we are looking for several Master's thesis students to join our research environment and contribute to the work of shaping next generations wireless network. This is not a standard thesis placement. It is a structured program that brings thesis students together as a cohort, giving you access to world-class mentors, a collaborative research community, and a clear view into the real challenges that define the frontier of wireless technology.
You will choose your thesis topic together with your supervisor, based on your interests and background. Topic areas span the full breadth of 6G research - from theoretical foundations to hands-on implementation and evaluation. Examples include multi-antenna channel state information, wireless backhaul, radio propagation, positioning, sensing, radio-near algorithms, machine learning for the air interface, radio digital twins, over-the-air measurements, spectrum sensing, and device research. The list is long on purpose: we want curious people, and we will find the right fit together.
The ambition is high. Thesis work here is coached and mentored with the goal that outcomes can reach international publication quality - because we believe that is what the best thesis experiences should look like.
What you will do:
- Work with your supervisor to define and refine a clear research problem, including the methods and evaluation approach that will guide your work
- Conduct a thorough literature review to understand where your work sits within current research
- Design, implement, and validate your chosen approach - whether that means developing theory, building tools, creating demos, or working with testbeds
- Document your work and present your findings and conclusions to relevant stakeholders at Ericsson Research
The skills you bring:
- You are a final-year MSc student in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- You have strong analytical skills and approach problems in a structured, methodical way
- You can write and run code - the specific language matters less than your ability to implement and test ideas
- You are comfortable searching, reading, and synthesizing information from technical and scientific sources
- You communicate clearly in English, both in writing and in conversation
- You are collaborative by nature - you ask questions, share progress, and flag obstacles rather than working in isolation
- A background or genuine interest in ML/AI is a plus, depending on the topic you pursue
