Core Qualifications
Strong knowledge of indexable tooling, (>5 years of experience), including:
- Turning
- Milling
- Drilling
- Grooving and Threading
Ability to interpret and evaluate:
- Part prints
- GD&T
- Material specifications
- Machine capabilities and process requirements
Understanding of key machining and cost drivers, including:
- Speeds and feeds.
- Tool life
- Cycle time
- Cost per part
- Insert grade and geometry selection.
Ideal Background
- Experience working for a cutting tool manufacturer, distributor, or machining company.
- Experience quoting both special tooling and standard indexable products.
- Familiarity with aerospace, medical, automotive, or general machining applications
- Ability to recommend tooling solutions based on workpiece material, setup rigidity, coolant application, machine horsepower, and production volume.
Key Responsibilities
- Review of RFQs, prints, and machining requirements
- Select appropriate indexable tooling solutions.
- Prepare accurate cost estimates and quotations.
- Support outside sales and customers with technical recommendations.
- Coordinate with engineering, production, and vendors regarding feasibility and lead times.
- Help improve quote win rate, margin performance, and response time.
- Design custom and indexable cutting tools, including complex geometries used in precision machining
- Own tooling designs from concept phase through production release
- Collaborate closely with sales, applications, and manufacturing teams
- Ensure designs meet performance, cost, and manufacturability targets
- Prepare detailed engineering documentation and CAD models for production
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or industrial engineering
- Experience designing indexable cutting tools (boring bars, inserts, form tools, or similar)
- Strong proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD
- Understanding of metal cutting processes and machining applications
- Strong organizational, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration skills
