The Role

Covetrus is a global animal-health technology and services leader dedicated to empowering veterinary practice partners to drive improved health and financial outcomes. We bring together products, services, and technology into a single platform that connects our customers to the solutions and insights they need to work best. Our passion for the well-being of animals and those who care for them drives us to advance the world of veterinary medicine.

The Director of Payments is responsible for leading Covetrus North America’s integrated and embedded payments strategy across our veterinary practice management software (PIMS) integrations, online pharmacy marketplace, and merchant of record accounts. This role combines strategic product leadership with direct business ownership—defining the payments product roadmap, managing the payments portfolio, and driving go-to-market strategy, pricing, and revenue growth. The Director of Payments serves as a key cross-functional leader, partnering with technology, sales, finance, and operations teams to deliver seamless, scalable payment experiences that create measurable value for veterinary practice customers and Covetrus alike.

Responsibilities

  • Own and drive the integrated payments product roadmap across PIMS integrations, online pharmacy marketplace, and merchant of record accounts, aligning priorities with business goals and customer needs.
  • Define product requirements and partner closely with engineering, design, and data teams to deliver seamless, scalable payment experiences for veterinary practice customers.
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and manage relationships with payment processors, acquiring banks, and fintech partners to ensure competitive capabilities and pricing.
  • Monitor payments industry trends, competitive landscape, and regulatory changes to identify product opportunities and proactively manage risk.
  • Define and track KPIs and success metrics for the payments product suite, providing regular performance reporting to senior leadership.
  • Develop and execute the go-to-market strategy for Covetrus North America’s payments offerings, including pricing models, packaging, and sales enablement materials.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key merchant customers, payment networks (Visa, Mastercard), payment processors, and strategic fintech partners.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to expand payment adoption across the Covetrus customer base, driving merchant activation and long-term retention.
  • Partner with finance and legal teams to ensure compliance with Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards, applicable regulations, and risk management frameworks.
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, and customer success teams to develop effective go-to-market programs and support pipeline growth for payments products.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in payments, fintech, or payments-adjacent roles, with at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Deep understanding of the payments ecosystem, including payment processing, acquiring, issuing, card networks (Visa, Mastercard), and merchant of record models.
  • Prior experience at a payment processor, payments fintech (e.g., Stripe, Adyen, Worldpay, Fiserv), or as Head of Payments at a software company; ISV payments or PayFac experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage product roadmaps from concept through launch within a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in pricing strategy, revenue growth, and business performance management for payments or SaaS products.
  • Experience with PIMS (Practice Information Management Systems) or vertical SaaS platforms is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex payment concepts for non-technical and executive audiences.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making capabilities; ability to interpret financial and operational data to drive business outcomes.
  • Proven track record working cross-functionally with product, engineering, sales, finance, legal, and compliance teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced degree such as an MBA or M.S. in Business, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
