The Role
We're seeking a Digital Audience Specialist to help grow, engage, and retain audiences across our local news brands. This role is responsible for programming and optimizing digital products and distribution channels-including websites, newsletters, social media, mobile apps, push notifications, and breaking news alerts-with a focus on delivering meaningful experiences to key audience segments.
The ideal candidate is a data-informed strategist who understands the digital funnel journey-from attracting new users to deepening engagement and driving conversions. You'll work closely with editorial, product, and marketing teams to ensure our content and distribution strategies are aligned with audience needs, platform behaviors and brand mission.
In this role, you will focus on digital content curation, digital distribution and promotion, content optimization (e.g., crafting better digital headlines, selecting the best digital media to go with a story, threading existing content into stories, and more), and growing digital subscriptions to our premium products. You'll also develop skills of news judgment, brand management, and revenue generation. Our digital brands reach 10 million visitors every month, guaranteeing a large, engaged audience for your work.
Key Responsibilites
  • Curate and present content on digital platforms and products that resonates with our target digital audiences, using data to guide decisions
  • Identify and implement compelling ways to feature content on digital platforms, including newsletters, sites, apps and social media, with a focus on engagement and user experience
  • Show expertise with newsletters, including curating content, assessing audience engagement and using data to drive decision-making that improves ROI
  • Work with content teams to promote breaking news and timely content in an urgent way on digital platforms (newsletters, push alerts, apps, sites, social media)
  • Make decisions with mobile audiences in mind
  • Optimize digital content (stories, videos, photos, live streams, etc.) for maximum search engine reach, social referrals, audience engagement and user experience
  • Generate content ideas and create digital content (photo galleries, videos, digital graphics, news bursts, polls, quizzes, etc.) to grow engagement on our digital products
  • Write clear and compelling headlines, teases, news bursts and social media posts for all products, including sites and newsletters
  • Use news judgment to make appropriate content decisions for our brands
  • Review and analyze metrics to inform daily content and strategy decisions
  • Effectively and regularly communicate and collaborate with colleagues, managers and other stakeholders across departments
  • Proactively solve problems and help others find solutions when needed
  • Stay current on digital audience, technology and advertising trends to help drive our business
  • Handle other assignments as needed, showing flexibility and adaptability

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED and 5 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as any level degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline and 3 years' experience; or 7 years' experience in a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of newsletter experience preferred
  • Ability to work competently, reliably and consistently in a hybrid work environment (in-office work could be around 25%+)
  • Ability to be flexible and work in a high-energy, fast-paced environment that can sometimes become chaotic
  • Interest and/or background in the news industry and desire to grow within our company is a plus
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to support a 24/7 operation - including working evenings and weekend shifts when needed
