The Machine Learning Department (MLD) at Carnegie Mellon University is a leading hub for research and education in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The Delphi Group within MLD is seeking a versatile Data Engineer proficient in SQL, Python, and Apache Airflow to design, maintain, and optimize robust data pipelines. The ideal candidate blends technical breadth, with additional exposure to tools like Postgres, MySQL, Django, or data visualization, with strong leadership and mentorship abilities. Beyond hands-on engineering, this role requires an adaptable collaborator who can lead small projects, translate complex requirements from a multidisciplinary team of epidemiologists, statisticians, and researchers, and seamlessly bridge the gap between academic research and innovative software solutions.

Core Responsibilities

  • Support, participate in, and lead technical projects.
  • May guide or train lower-level staff. Participates in departmental and cross functional project teams.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation.
  • Supports user issues related to the system or application performance and availability.
  • Evaluates user requests to determine feasibility, cost and time requirements and system compatibility. Develops specifications based on user and system requirements.
  • Designs, develops, tests and maintains applications or systems programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of system programming and/or system administration experience required.
  • Strong communication, organization, planning, and teamwork skills necessary.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
