The Data Engineering team is the team that builds and maintains the data pipelines and tools that turn information from across our business into reliable, ready-to-use data for analysts, business leaders, and applications. As a key member of our Data Engineering team, you will turn business questions into trusted data solutions that help leaders across Choice Hotels make faster, better decisions.

Are you a hands-on problem solver with strong SQL and Python skills who enjoys partnering directly with business teams? We invite you to apply today for our Data Engineer II role and #MakeItYourChoice.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design, build, maintain, and optimize batch extract-transform-load (ETL/ELT) pipelines and data models that power analytics, reporting, and business operations, with a focus on performance, scalability, reliability, and efficient resource use.
  • Partner with business operations and regional leaders to clarify requirements, define metrics, establish delivery expectations, and prioritize work based on business impact.
  • Deliver items from the data and analytics backlog, including pipelines, models, dashboards, and ad hoc requests, and reduce future demand by automating recurring requests and building reusable, self-serve data assets.
  • Protect the quality and consistency of key business metrics across regions and systems by implementing automated data validation, transformation testing, reconciliation, monitoring, and alerting to confirm data accuracy, completeness, and freshness.
  • Monitor production pipelines, troubleshoot failures, investigate data discrepancies, implement corrective actions, and document recurring issues to improve reliability and reduce operational overhead, including participation in the on-call rotation.
  • Support the evaluation and migration of our data integration tools, including pipeline inventory, validation, parallel runs, and retirement of legacy jobs.
  • Support our internal conversational analytics application by maintaining data connections, improving data quality for its answers, and helping measure usage and accuracy.
  • Prototype quickly with users, gather feedback, and turn successful prototypes into production-ready solutions.
  • Write clean, tested, well-documented code and take part in code and design reviews.
  • Document standards and runbooks (step-by-step operating guides), and provide training and hands-on support to drive adoption of delivered solutions.

Your Experience, Skills & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field required, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software engineering.

  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices for data pipelines, including automated testing, version-controlled deployments, and promotion of changes across development and production environments, using tools such as Harness, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
  • Proficiency with Git-based source control (e.g., Bitbucket, GitHub, GitLab), including pull requests and branching strategies.
  • Familiarity with a major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Solid understanding of data modeling concepts, such as dimensional modeling and slowly changing dimensions.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound tradeoffs in a fast-moving environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Demonstrates key competencies to include: Cultivates Innovation, Action Oriented, Nimble Learning.
  • Preferred: experience with infrastructure as code and containerization (e.g., Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes) and with data governance and observability tools (e.g., Monte Carlo, Great Expectations).
