About Cloudflare's Legal Team
Ensuring the privacy of personal information is core to Cloudflare's mission to help build a better Internet. Our legal team helps the company deal with complex matters by anticipating regulatory changes, and guiding the company around the complications and distractions that arise from such obstacles. Our Legal Privacy intern will help foster our unique corporate philosophy and approach, in which the security and privacy of our customers' data are paramount.
About the internship program
The ideal Legal Privacy intern is passionate about making the Internet a better place. You will work alongside experienced legal team members to partner with them in developing legal resources and supporting legal initiatives that help improve Cloudflare's privacy and data compliance posture. We are looking for interns who are curious, proactive, and interested in devising innovative and elegant solutions to complicated privacy legal challenges.
What you'll do
- Research and advise on privacy developments and data protection laws impacting global technology companies and work collaboratively across multiple functions to assess the impact of such laws and developments on Cloudflare's business
- Help develop resources such as policies, processes, and playbooks for global privacy and data protection compliance, including the following topic areas:
- Data breach notification requirements
- Critical infrastructure requirements
- Data localization and sovereignty requirements
- Public sector IT service provider certifications
- Privacy biometric compliance
- Marketing privacy requirements
- HR/employment privacy compliance
- Interact with engineers and product subject matter experts on legal privacy and infrastructure topics that impact the development and operation of Cloudflare products
- Contribute to blogs, white papers, and marketing materials on Cloudflare's privacy and data protection posture and key privacy issues and features
- Help advise on the privacy aspects of Cloudflare's marketing strategy, including analysis under consumer protection laws like the U.S. CAN-SPAM law and the EU's ePrivacy Directive.
- Support legal privacy counsel in coordinating and advising on Cloudflare's response to privacy and infrastructure incidents
- Contribute to comments on pending legislation relating to privacy, data protection, and critical infrastructure in the EU and United States
Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience
- Basic understanding of major global and regional privacy laws, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and U.S. state comprehensive privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
- Familiarity with fundamental concepts like Privacy by Design (PbD), Data Minimization, Purpose Limitation, and lawful bases for processing personal data
- Ability to efficiently use legal databases and translate them to simple digestible language.
- Experience working in IT environments and applying legal requirements to complicated technical systems and products
- Strong organizational, communication skills (written and verbal), problem-solving skills. Attention to detail
- Understanding how to use AI legal research tools effectively and leverage them to perform day-to-day tasks.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills and drive to learn and adapt new technologies.
- Curiosity, empathy and ability to get things done.
- Ability to commit to a minimum 12 week summer internship.
- In the office 3-5 days a week in the Washington D.C. office
Compensation
- Estimated hourly pay of $24/hour.
