At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.

All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

We're looking for a detail driven problem solver who thrives on precision. As a ConversionOps Associate, you'll independently manage the transfer of retirement plans from prior providers onto our platform. That means validating asset allocations, reconciling trust data, and establishing participant loan records before going live. You'll partner closely with CX Onboarding, Compliance, and Reconciliations to catch discrepancies before they become downstream problems.

If you're energized by high stakes work, get satisfaction from finding the one number that doesn't add up, and want to build the operational foundation that makes every conversion go smoothly, this role is for you.

About the Team:

At Gusto 401(k), conversions are the foundation of trust. Before a plan ever starts, our ConversionOps team has already moved every dollar, every loan, and every historical record into place, accurately and on time.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Own asset allocations. Independently manage participant level asset allocations during plan conversions, ensuring accurate parsing, validation, and allocation of transferred funds.
  • Reconcile with precision. Review trust reports and legacy provider data to reconcile asset balances prior to system upload, and validate fund mapping, participant elections, and allocation logic to support accurate account setup at go live.
  • Resolve discrepancies. Perform ad hoc reconciliation of cash movements and asset balances during and after conversion, and drive open items to resolution.
  • Establish loan records. Set up and configure participant loan records during conversion, ensuring accurate balances, repayment schedules, and payroll alignment prior to plan activation.
  • Protect data integrity. Ensure historical data supports downstream compliance testing and reporting requirements.
  • Catch issues early. Identify gaps or inconsistencies in source data, and partner proactively with client facing teams to resolve them before go live.
  • Eliminate downstream pain. Make sure all required data is collected, validated, and uploaded accurately before plan activation, so testing, compliance, and 5500 processing can run without rework.
  • Collaborate cross functionally. Partner closely with Client Success, Onboarding, Compliance, and Reconciliations to resolve discrepancies in trust reports, asset allocations, and participant level data.
  • Improve how we work. Contribute to automation initiatives and tooling enhancements that improve conversion accuracy and efficiency.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 3+ years of experience in retirement plan administration, financial operations, or onboarding focused operational roles.
  • Strong understanding of contribution types (pre tax, Roth, employer), loan structures, and participant level retirement data.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including lookup functions, pivot tables, data validation, and error analysis.
  • Ability to independently manage competing priorities in a high volume, deadline driven environment.
  • Adaptability to shift with changing priorities without losing focus on quality
  • Quick product mastery to pick up new tools and platforms fast and can speak to them with confidence
  • Strong analytical mindset with high attention to detail and a systems thinking orientation.
  • 401(k) experience supporting plan conversions, asset transitions, loans, or trust reconciliation preferred.
  • Clear-headed problem solving — you diagnose issues at both individual and systemic levels and implement solutions that stick

Our cash compensation range for this role is $68,570 - $84,000 / year in Denver.  Additional locations will vary based on our geographical pay approach. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate location, experience, and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
