Our Substation group is currently looking to add a Commercial Specialist to our growing team, based in Calgary, AB; Edmonton, AB; or Toronto, ON.

Reporting to the Vice President of Substations and Renewables, we are seeking a skilled professional with in-depth experience in commercial contract management, negotiations, project controls, and risk. The successful candidate will support the contractual and financial aspects of our construction projects, ensuring profitability, compliance, and risk mitigation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the full contract lifecycle, from tendering to execution, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry standards
  • Work closely with estimating, project management, legal, finance, and operations teams to drive commercial success
  • Draft, review, interpret and negotiate contracts with clients, subcontractors, and vendors to safeguard the company’s interests
  • Identify potential risks in contracts and projects (including financial, legal, and operational risks), developing mitigation strategies to minimize impacts
  • Ensure Change Management protocols are established during execution and supported throughout the contract
  • Support project team with validation of incoming change requests and subcontractor notices, where required
  • Provide risk management support related to forecasting, scheduling, and performance evaluation
  • Conduct financial evaluations of projects, analyzing budgets, forecasts, and cash flows to optimize profitability
  • Use analytics to assess financial data, track project performance, and enhance business insights for informed decision-making
  • Lead claims and disputes activities, ensuring fair outcomes and minimizing financial exposure
  • Travel to conferences, tradeshows and internal / external stakeholder meetings as needed

Requirements
  • Post-Secondary Education in a related field (i.e. engineering, business administration, finance, law, construction management, etc.)
  • 5 years’ experience in commercial or contract management, preferably in the construction industry
  • Working knowledge of contract law and standard industry contracts (e.g., lump sum, unit rate, EPC)
  • Strong financial acumen, with proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, and cost management
  • Experience with project analytics, including dashboard creation, reporting, and data visualization for financial and operational insights
  • Proven negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Demonstrated competence in relevant software such as Microsoft Office, contract management systems, and financial analysis tools

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

  • Commercial and project controls experience in large-scale commercial or infrastructure projects
  • Experience with Salesforce Analytics
  • Familiarity with construction procurement and subcontractor management
  • Experience in utility construction

This position offers a base salary range of $80 000 – $130 000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
