A CNC programmer determines the sequence of shaping operations and chooses the cutting tools needed. A programmer analyzes job orders, drawings, blueprints and other data and then performs all the necessary calculations required to manufacture new and special components.  A programmer writes programs or modifies existing programs and stores them on the program data base. After programming, he/she may ensure that the machines and programs operate correctly and that products meet specifications.

  • Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods, processes and tooling strategies associated with CNC machining operations
  • Maintain CNC program and router data base for each product manufactured, by machine process and machine type
  • Support Operations cost analyses in:  Justification of changes to processes, tooling and/or equipment, project justifications and post-audits
  • Participate in the design and development of custom jigs and fixtures
  • Support manufacturing operations in identifying and resolving production issues as it pertains to machine setup, tooling and programming
  • Support and initiate Lean manufacturing, cost reduction and continuous improvement initiatives 
  • Perform time studies to evaluate effectiveness against routing generation as it relates to production run and setup times
  • Work with design engineering and production operation to see that manufacturing processes are optimized and standards are set which maximizes efficiencies for throughput and quality
  • Generate process routings in MRP system required to manufacture current products and new product introductions
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of shop CNC employees 
  • Assist Production Supervisors in achieving company goals 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, a 2-year Machine Tool Technical Diploma, and/or two to four years related experience in programming for a CNC manufacturing environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • CNC machining environment with a tooling and process development background a plus. Visual basic or similar programming experience is a plus but not required
  • Knowledge of 5 Axis Machining helpful, but not necessary
  • Knowledge of CNC programming (Mastercam) preferred
  • Ability to write computer programs
  • Skill in blueprint reading and knowledge of GDT
  • Possess reading comprehension, knowledge of mathematics and use of active listening skills
  • Knowledge and experience with precision measuring tools
  • Employ critical thinking, logic and reasoning to troubleshoot and solve problems
  • Knowledge of Lean-World Class Manufacturing methods
  • Instruct others as well as actively continuing self-learning
  • Empower time management techniques

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, 2-year Machine Tool Technical Diploma, and/or two to four years related CNC programming experience (or equivalent)
  • Ability to write computer programs
  • Skill in blueprint reading and knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT)
  • Knowledge and experience with precision measuring tools
  • Employ critical thinking, logic and reasoning to troubleshoot and solve problems
  • Knowledge of Lean-World Class Manufacturing methods
  • Instruct others and actively continue self-learning
  • Ability to support manufacturing operations in machine setup, tooling and programming
  • CNC machining environment experience with tooling and process development
  • Visual Basic or similar programming experience
  • Knowledge of CNC programming (Mastercam)
  • Knowledge of 5 Axis Machining
