The Mobility Group Chief Engineer leads technical execution across commercial vehicle programs and serves as the system-level authority for vehicle architecture, cross-disciplinary integration, and technical strategy from concept through validation.

This role is accountable for defining and delivering technically sound, commercially viable solutions that create measurable value and customer satisfaction. The Chief Engineer operates at the intersection of engineering execution, customer engagement, and business growth, translating complex requirements into integrated vehicle platforms that meet performance, cost, and schedule objectives.

Working closely with matrixed engineering teams, Program Management, and Business Development, the Chief Engineer sets technical direction, drives integration across subsystems, manages risk, and ensures disciplined execution through design, build, test, and evaluation phases.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute commercial mobility programs by leading technical staff and owning technical deliverables.
    • Serve as the technical authority for vehicle architecture, subsystem integration, and design tradeoffs.
    • Lead programs with responsibility for technical approach, customer satisfaction, quality, schedule, and profitability in coordination with Program Management.
    • Coordinate planning, organization, integration, and completion of engineering programs.
    • Lead platform-level design, subsystem design, technology integration, vehicle build, objective testing, and subjective evaluation.
    • Approve design changes and drawing releases. Resolve engineering design, integration, and test issues.
    • Identify technical and execution risks and develop mitigation plans to protect customer commitments and program outcomes.
    • Support Program Managers in defining scope, planning financials, tracking costs, and achieving target profitability.
  • Play a lead technical role in shaping new business opportunities, including assessing technical feasibility, framing value propositions, and supporting proposal development.
  • Define and communicate a technical and commercial vision aligned with broader business strategy, shaping program direction and influencing customer roadmaps.
  • Promote engineering best practices across the organization while maintaining a professional, solution-oriented customer experience, including in demanding or high-ambiguity environments.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong systems integration approach to full vehicle development.
  • Deep understanding of vehicle architecture and cross-functional subsystem integration.
  • Experience with chassis systems, propulsion systems, energy storage, electrical systems, and vehicle controls.
  • Vehicle electrification experience, including powertrain architecture, energy management, and thermal integration.
  • Exposure to vehicle automation, autonomy, robotics, or advanced control systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and functional safety concepts is beneficial.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity, evolving requirements, and competing constraints in early-stage commercial programs.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Advanced degree is a plus.
  • Approximately 10 years of relevant engineering experience in automotive, mobility, off-highway, vocational, specialty vehicle, mobile robotic, or adjacent commercial industries.
  • Broad experience across vehicle systems, including propulsion, driveline, electrical systems, control systems, structures, and energy systems.
  • Experience with prototype development and low-volume manufacturing is a plus.
  • Exposure to multiple markets and the ability to apply technology across domains.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong industry network with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and technology partners is highly desirable.
  • Hybrid work environment. Expected to be in the office the majority of the time (>85%), depending on program needs.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as required to meet program milestones and customer commitments.
  • Travel may be required depending on program needs.

Pay Range:

$103,300.00 - $177,700.00

The above pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target pay for the position across all U.S. locations. Within this range, individual pay is determined by various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate's experience, education and skills, as well as the equity of pay among team members in similar positions.
