Job Summary
Johnson & Johnson MedTech is seeking an Automation Engineer II to join the Ethicon Georgia Campus Technical Operations team in Cornelia, GA.
This role is primarily focused on manufacturing equipment performance, automation systems, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Automation Engineer II will lead or support the design, installation, validation, and optimization of manufacturing equipment, while providing technical expertise to troubleshoot and resolve automation-related issues. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, compliant, and efficient manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams and external vendors to design new manufacturing equipment or modify existing equipment in alignment with regulatory, industry, and company standards
- Lead or support equipment-related projects from concept through implementation, including technical execution and project coordination
- Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment and automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and vision systems, to resolve issues and improve performance
- Support the introduction of new equipment, including installation, commissioning, and validation activities (FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, PQ)
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment safety, quality, reliability, and efficiency
- Support and/or lead quality and safety investigations related to equipment, ensuring timely closure of corrective actions
- Prepare and deliver technical reports, project updates, and documentation
- Coordinate training for operators and maintenance personnel on equipment operation and maintenance
- Analyze equipment performance and maintenance trends to support asset lifecycle and capital investment decisions
- Develop and present Capital Appropriation Requests (CARs) to support project scope and funding
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and Johnson & Johnson regulations, policies, and procedures
- Uphold Johnson & Johnson environmental, health, safety, and Credo-based standards
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field is required
Required Experience & Skills
- 0–2 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, or relevant internship/co-op experience
- Hands-on experience with industrial automation systems such as PLCs (e.g., Allen Bradley or Siemens), robotics, or related control systems
- Experience working with industrial control systems, including PLCs/DCS, servomotors, vision systems, instrumentation, SCADA, or MES systems
- Ability to support equipment design, installation, qualification, troubleshooting, and optimization in a manufacturing environment
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or other regulated manufacturing environments
- Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and GxP processes

- This position is primarily onsite in Cornelia, GA
- Occasional onsite support may be required in Athens, GA
