The Role

This position is a hybrid role with three days per week expected in our Chicago office.

What Your Day to Day Will Look Like

  • You will serve as the primary legal partner for the People Operations (HR) team, providing strategic advice on a broad range of employment matters including recruitment, hiring performance management, and separations

  • You will manage labor relations and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including wage and hour, FMLA, ADA, and EEO requirements. 

  • You will conduct and oversee internal investigations, ensuring they are handled with impeccable judgment and discretion. 

  • Your transactional work will include drafting and negotiating executive employment agreements, separation agreements, protective covenant agreements, and independent contractor arrangements. 

  • You will partner with the business to evaluate legal risks and opportunities regarding a remote and distributed workforce, international expansion, and the use of AI in human resources. 

  • You will collaborate across internal business units to ensure employment policies align with Tempus’ broader mission. 

  • In addition to employment law, you may work on other general legal areas based on interest and experience, such as corporate governance or mergers and acquisitions.

Required Qualifications

  • JD Degree from a top-tier law school. 

  • At least 10 years of relevant employment and labor law experience at an established law firm or in-house role. 

  • Current bar membership in at least one state; eligible for admission to the Illinois bar. 

  • Deep knowledge of the employment regulatory environment, including experience with multi-state compliance and labor relations. 

  • Impeccable judgment, particularly in high-stakes personnel matters and the communication of legal risks to leadership. 

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to distill complex legal issues into actionable business advice. 

  • A great teammate who thrives in a supportive, collaborative, and fast-paced environment. 

  • Energized by multi-tasking and re-prioritizing work to meet deadlines in a high-throughput, open work environment.

Chi: $250,000 - $300,000

The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Illinois and may vary for other locations (California, Colorado, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position.
