Job Description:

The Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Human Geography specializing in Geographic Information Science and Technology (GISc&T) and geospatial data science. We seek a scholar with strong expertise in GISc&T and advanced geospatial methods to answer complex societal and human-environment questions.

Relevant methodological expertise may include spatial-temporal analysis, geospatial data science, remote sensing, GeoAI, WebGIS, geovisualization, or related computational approaches. Candidates are not expected to specialize in all these areas. We are particularly interested in candidates who can expand the department's methodological capacity and contribute to innovative applications of geospatial technologies in research and teaching.

The substantive area of specialization is open, but the successful candidate's scholarship must have a strong human-geographic dimension. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, health and well-being, population and inequality, food systems, energy and infrastructure, environmental change, hazards and disaster vulnerability, community resilience, critical GIS, or other societally relevant dimensions of human-environment interaction. We welcome scholarship that uses geospatial methods not simply as technical tools, but to advance understanding of important social, spatial, and environmental problems.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in GISc&T, spatial-temporal analysis, and environmental studies, while developing courses in their areas of methodological and topical expertise. The position will also offer opportunities to contribute to and collaborate with the department's Environmental Studies and Disaster Science and Management areas and to strengthen interdisciplinary geospatial training across departmental programs in both geography and anthropology.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally fundable research program; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; mentor undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students; and contribute to the department's growing emphasis on interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship. Opportunities exist for collaboration across geography and anthropology and with programs and units throughout LSU, such as the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. A PhD in human geography, geographic information science, or a closely related field with a strong human-geographic dimension is required or must be completed by the start of the appointment.
