The Accounting Manager works under the general direction of the Director of Accounting & Assistant Treasurer and plays a key role in the oversight of the accounting and financial reporting functions. The Accounting Manager is responsible for leading a team of accounting staff that delivers superior results, developing solutions to complex business problems and enhancing processes and procedures to maximize efficiency while maintaining strong internal controls.
Key Responsibilities:

Supervises and performs timely review of the work flow of a team of Financial Accountants and is responsible for their daily operations, including task assignments and continuity plans based on ability, opportunity and efficiency. Ensures adherence to the quarterly and year end close calendars such that all internal and external filings deadlines are met. Troubleshoots effectively and efficiently.

Possesses strong management skills. Is responsible for developing individualized performance and development goals on a timely basis for staff. Is responsible to effectively coach, monitor and hold staff accountable to the achievement of performance and developmental goals. Conducts timely performance evaluations and makes performance recommendations as appropriate.

Is considered a technical expert for their team and is seen and used as the go-to person for accounting and/or transactional questions in assigned areas such as premiums, losses, commissions, reinsurance, and cash accounting.

Carries out internal control activities in accordance with the close calendars to ensure accuracy and completeness in the accounting records; can offer design solutions and can implement any necessary control changes as required.

Demonstrates strong independent problem-solving skills; possesses excellent communications skills to be able to work effectively with cross lines of business to resolve any matters efficiently.

Possesses strong analytical skills and utilizes these skills to identify inaccuracies or to appropriately explain budget or prior year variances.

Is very collaborative and works well with others within the business unit and across the organization.

Is seen as a primary contact for internal and external auditors.

Works with Director and cross-functional team on company-wide IT projects.

Monitors and manages own performance and developmental goals to ensure achievement.

Possesses an approachable and engaging demeanor and promotes positive customer service in all dealings internally and externally, and ensures the same of the Financial Accountants.
Key Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting plus 7+ years of experience including:

Minimum of 2 years of management experience.

CPA required.
-
Financial services industry experience required.

Insurance industry/statutory accounting experience desirable.
