Accounting Intern

Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc. (HYMH), a world-class manufacturer of industrial forklift trucks, has an outstanding opportunity for a developing and emerging business student at our Americas headquarters located in Greenville, NC. This part-time internship requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week, with a minimum duration of 6 months and the potential to extend up to 18 months. The start date is as soon as possible. 

As an Accounting Intern, you will work in a financial services environment supporting manufacturing processes such as: 

• Accounts payable 

• Sales invoicing 

• Cash application 

• Sales tax 

This role provides exposure to various facets of a manufacturing business environment, where finance and accounting processes have upstream and downstream impacts. The work environment is high volume and fast-paced, dealing with: 

• Multiple currency transactions 

• Balance sheet account reconciliations 

• Various software applications, including SAP 

Interns will gain experience in both manual and electronic document processing, including automated systems such as: 

• 3-way match processing 

• OCR (Optical Character Recognition) 

• Journal Entry (JE) uploads 

Our finance team is highly focused on accuracy, efficiency, and internal control. Interns will also gain audit exposure, including: 

• External Auditors 

• Corporate Internal Auditors 

• SOX Auditors 

• Sales Tax Auditors

 We are looking for team-oriented candidates with strong analytical and financial skill sets.

What you will need:

 The successful Accounting Intern will have the following Minimum Qualifications:   

• Enrollment as a junior or senior in a BS or MSA degree in Accounting 

• Strong communicator with great verbal, written, and interpersonal skills 

• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills 

• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook 

• A willingness to learn and adapt 

 The ideal Accounting Intern will have the following Preferred Qualifications:   

• Basic knowledge of SAP or other accounting software 

• Understanding of general ledger accounting 

• Experience with financial reconciliations and auditing procedures 

• Demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities showcasing leadership and initiative 

What you will do: 

A HYMH accounting intern position has the following Key Accountabilities:  

• Process and post documents, including accounts payable, customer invoicing, and cash applications. Reconcile vendor statements. 

• Assist in sales tax return processing, payments, tax research, and audit support. 

• Perform spreadsheet analysis, balance sheet reconciliations, and support audit requests. 

• Identify process improvements, evaluate metrics, and recommend solutions to reduce errors. 

• Work with cross-functional teams, gaining experience in a global manufacturing finance environment. 

• Develop a solid understanding of the assigned role by engaging in on-the-job training and receiving mentorship.   

• Complete assigned tasks with guidance from your supervisor and team, gaining valuable insight into functional operations, management practices, and leadership strategies.   

• Build technical, managerial, and leadership competencies through hands-on experience and exposure to various assignments, preparing for a successful future as an employee or manager.   

• Actively participate in team projects and contribute to team meetings to support collaboration and achieve project goals.
