Protects life and property through firefighting, emergency medical aid, rescue, hazardous-materials response, fire prevention, and emergency communications. Operates and maintains fire apparatus, pumps, hoses, rescue equipment, and facilities; participates in drills, inspections, training, salvage operations, and community safety programs. The role requires physical exertion in hazardous environments and may assist with supervising or training personnel.

Leads municipal current and long-range planning programs, including complex planning studies, development applications, comprehensive plan amendments, rezonings, annexations, site plans, and plats. Provides land-use planning assistance to communities, supports regional initiatives involving natural resources, hazard mitigation, and coastal management, prepares reports, presents findings to boards and elected officials, and supervises assigned staff.

Performs clerical and accounting tasks including coding receipts, daily cash reconciliation, accounts receivable and collections, journal entries, general ledger reconciliation, fixed asset maintenance, bank reconciliations, payroll and vendor payment preparation, financial reporting and analyses, and support of the central financial computer system for the City.
