Summary: Instinct is an AI agent that foregoes a traditional interface, communicating with users via text, call or WhatsApp. Get the latest on how it works, its most promising use cases and its privacy and security issues to consider before adopting the tool.

Artificial intelligence is poised to automate many aspects of everyday life, with Instinct AI being the latest player to capitalize on this trend. The company is known for its personal AI agent, an advanced system that can complete complex tasks with little to no human guidance. But unlike most AI tools, Instinct connects to a device’s applications to handle tasks on a user’s behalf and cultivate more personalized interactions.

What Is Instinct?

Instinct is a personal AI agent that performs tasks for users by connecting to a device’s applications, including mail, messaging and calendar apps. Unlike other AI tools, Instinct doesn’t have a traditional interface, such as an app with buttons. Instead, it interacts with users through direct messages, voice calls and WhatsApp. It runs in the cloud and uses vision-language models to process written and visual data when engaging with different apps.

Early users have given Instinct’s agent glowing reviews, and investors have taken notice. After achieving a $2.5 billion valuation in August 2026, the company raised enough funds to boost its valuation to $10 billion by the end of September 2026. Instinct is invite-only for now, but the excitement around it has become palpable. Here’s everything to know about how Instinct works, how it’s used in the real world and why it’s reigniting questions around AI safety.

A Primer on Agentic AIWhat Is Agentic AI?

What Is Instinct AI?

Instinct AI is an AI startup run by Spear Street Technology, a stock corporation based in California. Both companies were founded by Noah Shinn, who previously worked as a research scientist at AI customer service startup Sierra.

Instinct has also built an AI agent of the same name that runs in the cloud and connects to a device’s applications, such as calendar, email and messaging apps. It can access a device’s screen, audio system and location data as well. By combining these integrations and personal credentials, Instinct can perform on-device tasks across different applications, continue tedious work in the background and anticipate future needs based on a user’s personal data and digital activity, proactively following up when necessary.

These abilities set Instinct apart from popular offerings like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini. Because Instinct’s agent can track a user’s online habits and preferences, it can deliver a level of personalization not seen in chatbots and virtual assistants, which passively follow commands and wait for further instructions.

How Does Instinct AI Work?

Even among the swelling list of agentic products, Instinct is unique. It doesn’t come as a mobile app, desktop app or website. Instead, it embraces zero user interface — a framework that foregoes the usual features of a graphical UI like buttons and icons in favor of more intuitive ways of communicating, such as speech or haptic feedback.

As a result, Instinct runs in its own cloud environment, essentially operating a virtual computer and browser rather than living directly on a user’s device. It still must interact with different types of data and interfaces on devices, though. To navigate new information and situations, Instinct uses computer vision, or the ability to spot patterns and extract insights from visual data. It’s also powered by vision-language models, a class of AI models that combine computer vision and natural language processing to understand both written and visual data.

Together, these capabilities are intended to make engaging Instinct feel as natural as possible. Users simply call the agent via text message, voice call or WhatsApp and request it to perform a task. Instinct can then be left alone while users step away from their devices and go about their day. Whether a task is complete or challenges arise, Instinct takes the initiative to follow up with users as needed.

What Can Instinct AI Do?

Instinct is designed to make daily life easier by automating repetitive or mundane tasks. Below are a few examples of how users have applied it:

  • Life Administration: Instinct can handle “adulting” tasks like finding in-network doctors, filling out forms, sending emails and negotiating bills.

  • Online Shopping: Instinct can order items online like groceries and track deliveries while they’re in transit.

  • Travel Planning: Instinct can find flight deals, book hotel reservations and recommend restaurants, among other travel to-dos.

  • Scheduling: Instinct can schedule events and set reminders, even automatically making adjustments based on updates.

The team behind Instinct has also enhanced the agent’s features since its initial release. In September 2026, Noah Shinn announced a so-called “white glove service” called Instinct Concierge, enabling the agent to conduct phone calls on behalf of users. A month later, Shinn revealed that users could add Instinct to group chats to plan hangouts with friends, organize fantasy leagues or coordinate holiday get-togethers, among other scenarios.

How to Access Instinct: Invite Codes, Waitlist and Cost

Instinct is in beta as the company continues to explore scaling the agent’s compute. The only way to currently access Instinct is to receive a private invitation from an existing user. In the meantime, those interested in experimenting with the tool can visit instinct.com to sign up for the waitlist by entering a mobile number.

The lucky few already using Instinct have been able to do so for free, and Shinn wants to keep the agent free once it’s publicly released. That said, the company has introduced “curated recommendations” from industry professionals into the user experience, hinting that it may rely on an affiliate network or something akin to personalized ads to generate revenue instead of traditional subscriptions. But nothing is confirmed yet.

Is Instinct AI Safe?

The safety and security of Instinct’s agent is up for debate, as is the case with any agentic AI product these days. OpenAI already demonstrated the dangers of agents when its models escaped their test environment and hacked Hugging Face. And Instinct is proving to be just as risky. Users have reported the agent taking actions without their permission, such as storing emails, sending emails and logging into browsers with sign-up codes. Another user even discovered that Instinct can easily fall for phishing schemes.

Instinct’s terms of service have also come under scrutiny. Multiple users have circulated screenshots of an earlier version of the terms, expressing concerns around personal privacy and usage data. While Instinct has since adjusted its language, its terms still say that it can “disclose Usage Data in de-identified or aggregated forms for any lawful purpose, including to provide, operate, develop, and improve our technologies, products and services.”

Of course, Instinct remains in the quite early testing phase, and the company continues to update the agent as users share feedback. But unpredictable behavior and uncertainty around digital privacy are factors future users may want to consider before adopting this (or any other) agent.

Instinct AI is an artificial intelligence startup founded by Noah Shinn, a researcher and programmer. Instead, it operates in a virtual cloud environment, interacting with users through direct texts, voice calls or WhatsApp.

Instinct is still in beta and is available on an invite-only basis. That said, existing users can share private invitations with others. Otherwise, those interested in Instinct need to visit the company’s website to sign up for the waitlist.

No, Instinct embraces a philosophy called zero user interface, which replaces traditional features — like icons and buttons — with more intuitive forms of communication — like haptic feedback or speech. Once users sign up for Instinct, they engage it by texting, calling or sending a message on WhatsApp without visiting a dedicated app or website.

Running in a cloud environment, Instinct operates a virtual computer and browser to control applications on other devices and compile a user’s personal data and digital activity. When making purchases, Instinct can then access a user’s payment credentials, select items on websites and ask the user for permission before completing the purchase.
