Sometimes, the most effective way to learn as an engineer is to simply get to work — and share your insight with others.
That’s what Software Engineer Andrew Darling did when he joined Wolverine Trading, a firm that specializes in derivatives valuation, trading and value-added order execution across global equity, options and futures markets. After joining the firm as a market-maker, he identified a gap in how his team recorded critical-path performance metrics, so he implemented a high-performance tracing library that’s widely used today, with support from senior engineers.
“It’s one example where engineers at Wolverine are encouraged to identify, discuss, implement and share solutions across the organization,” Darling said.
Engineers at credit software company Bectran Inc also foster knowledge by sharing insight with others, according to Senior Software Engineer Niravkumar Limbani.
He said that most of his team’s technical knowledge is built through collaboration, which occurs every other day during the week through team huddles, where team members share updates on progress, discuss technical issues and explore solutions. This teamwork has helped Limbani’s team overcome various challenges, such as their recent efforts to migrate a project to Spring Boot.
“While we still have more to learn, this experience was valuable because working through the challenges together allowed us to enhance our technical skills through practical experience, rather than just theoretical learning,” Limbani said.
While it’s key for engineers to share knowledge with each other, it’s also beneficial to share insights with the rest of the engineering community. At Coupa, a procurement, finance and supply chain operations platform provider, engineers connected with the local tech community by hosting a Ruby Meetup at the company’s Pune, India office. During the event, Coupa leaders discussed topics like the future of software development, while showcasing how the company’s engineers are using AI to develop cutting-edge solutions.
“Attendees came away with a clear architectural blueprint for running a global, AI-native SaaS platform at scale, and actionable strategies on how to embed AI into their daily coding workflows to boost individual productivity,” the Coupa team said.
Read on to see what else Darling, Limbani and the Coupa team had to say about how their engineering teams create a culture of continuous learning and how this influences their day-to-day work.

How does your engineering team create opportunities for engineers to learn from one another and strengthen their technical skills?
At Coupa, we believe the best technology isn’t built in isolation. True innovation occurs when we open our doors, share our architectural insights and engage with the wider engineering ecosystem. With this spirit of collaboration, we recently hosted our latest Ruby Meetup at our Coupa Pune, India office. Drawing an incredible crowd of passionate developers, continuous learners and tech visionaries, the event was a powerful reminder of the vibrance of the local tech community. Our goal for the afternoon was simple: pull back the curtain on the robust technology driving our $10 trillion Total Spend Management platform, connect deeply with the local development community, and showcase what it means to build a career at Coupa.
While the networking was invaluable, the true core of the meetup centered on our technical sessions. We had an outstanding lineup of internal Coupa engineering experts take the stage to share real-world engineering strategies and case studies.
The first session dove into the massive scale of Coupa’s application layer. Our experts detailed how our teams manage massive enterprise applications, balance high-throughput database interactions, and ensure global operational resilience without compromising agility. The second major topic tackled the future of software development. Our team demonstrated how Coupa engineers are actively leveraging cutting-edge AI utilities to optimize code generation, safely automate debugging and skyrocket engineering velocity.

How does your engineering team create opportunities for engineers to learn from one another and strengthen their technical skills?
Making markets is a deep problem space. As such, there is no shortage of opportunity for newly hired engineers to become experts in specific details. When joining the market-making group, I identified a gap in how we recorded critical-path performance metrics. With guidance from more senior engineers at the firm, I implemented a high-performance tracing library that is now widely used and continues to be improved upon. It’s one example where engineers at Wolverine are encouraged to identify, discuss, implement and share solutions across the organization. Engineering leadership believes strongly in this style of diving into problems and sharing work for everyone’s benefit.
“Engineering leadership believes strongly in this style of diving into problems and sharing work for everyone’s benefit.”
What is one recent technical challenge, new technology or knowledge-sharing experience that helped you grow as an engineer?
Right now, my primary responsibility at Wolverine is implementing systems for consuming real-time market data. It’s a challenging problem space. The sheer amount of data, as well as the correctness and latency requirements make it a great environment to grow. Recently, I applied lessons from this work to modernize our firm’s primary multicast technology stack. As part of this effort, I’m learning how to effectively help coworkers migrate their systems. It’s both motivating to see my work improve performance and interesting to gain familiarity with the various projects at Wolverine.
How does Wolverine Trading encourage engineers to share knowledge with teammates or participate in the broader engineering community?
Wolverine puts a high emphasis on knowledge-sharing. When joining the firm, new engineers are paired with two mentors: one intra-team and one cross-team. Additionally, all new hires are invited to an options trading course that teaches the fundamentals of market-making. Beyond onboarding, engineers across the market-making group meet regularly to discuss firmwide priorities.
